I need to know what you guys have had and liked best...

I currently run with 5.22, works pretty good.

I have heard that if I go higher (6.31, 6.47), it may slow me down as those are optimized for the GeForce.

Can anybody confirm or deny..??

I can only go by what information I have got from various benchmarks, but from playing around with different detonators I got the following order of speed:

Fastest
5.45*
5.30 (The difference between
6.47* these two is almost nothing)
5.22
6.31
Slowest

In all honesty, from 6.47 upwards, it is very hard to notice any difference in speed to the eye, but 6.31's appeared to definitely go slower on my TNT2 Pro (clocked at ultra speed during the tests - 155 core/180 mem).

Note: drivers with a * next to them are not official releases.

Edit:
Note: This holds true for my computer configuration, but if yours varies in processor, memory, chipset this information could be wrong. My system configuration:

PIII-600 (512k cache)
192MB CAS-2 RAM
Intel BX (Gigabyte BX-2000) motherboard

You might want to try the files section at the Savage News site. They have 5.30, 5.32, 5.33 available. These are pretty much all the same as each other, although I think most people settled on the 5.32's being the fastest. Also, I forgot to put a * next to the 5.30's, sorry. The only official ones there are the 5.22's and the 6.31's, although you may find your graphics card maker has their own drivers based on one of the un-official sets, so you may want to consider those.
