Hi all,

I got a friend who wants to get a new computer. Mostly, he wants to use it for internet, word processing, and watching some dvd's or playing music. He doesn't play games.

What would be nice for him is:

DVD and CD burner
LCD

I am looking but am kind of busy moving in and stuff (school starts on Monday), so if anybody knows of some good deals off hand that would save me some time looking.

Thanks :)

edit: Note that I'm not going to build it for him... I don't want to do "tech support for life." So it has to be from a company. I'm just going to help him order it as he knows next to nothing about computers.

I would check out a Dell value system. You can also find a good Compaq Athlong system at Best Buy for the price. I have seen complete Athlong XP 3000+ systems w/ printer and CRT at BB for $800, so an LCD system can be had for $1000.

I know you said you dont want to but honestly it will be much cheaper and a much better value.

If you must however, i guess Dell even though proprietary sucks. Maybe find a really slow Alienware or something?

he's not the one who wants the computer anyway and not everyone wants to spend time building on a computer. who cares if his friend wastes his money on a dell.

*sigh* if you get a Dell, even if you choose a P4 2.8, its gonna take about 5min to start up
You can help your friend out by running regedit and cancelling the thousands of programs Dell ques up at startup to speed things up.. System w/ CD-RW and DVD-rom with LCD (15") will easily be under $1000.. Just go to Dell and pick out the system, shouldnt take more than 5 min.. Just dont opt for all the BS software add-ins, you can always DL them
