I have a Dell P75 with 32 MB EDO RAM, 540 MB harddrive, #9 GXE PCI video card, SB16 and 14 in Viewsonic monitor that I could let slide for say $1100? ;) I'd even through in an external 14.4 modem!!!! :)

You can get a fairly decent PC from Dell for that money, but no powerhouse and mundane video, which is crucial for what the future holds. Build a system for your friend. That kind of money, and I can build a killer Thunderbird system, and you can too.

1) With or without a monitor? Does your friend already have a monitor?
2) How do they plan on using their Dell?
3) Do they want a CD-RW or will they add that on lateR?
4) DVD?
5) Would they like the extended 3 year next business day onsite warranty for $99 more (also covers monitor if purchased from Dell with the CPU).
6) Will they be doing any gaming? How much?
Which of these graphics cards will probably suit their needs the best?
32MB NVIDIA TNT2 M64 AGP Graphics Card
32MB DDR ATI Radeon 4X AGP Graphics
NEW 32MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS with MDK2 Action Game
NEW 64 MB DDR NVidia GeForce2 GTS with MDK2 Action Game
NEW 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce2 ULTRA GTS w/DVI Graphics w/MDK2

Answer those questions and we can definitely get your friend the best Dell system that $1200 can buy. Unfortunately there's also taxes and shipping they'll have to pay which is probably around $100-$150 :(

mircon is decent but they're "Bleh" too

alienware, hyerpsonic, falcon, voodoopc

they're ok but they're too expensive

Sure I could have probably saved $300 or more building my own machine but the two things I love the most about my $2,000 Dell are:

It's QUIET!
19" FD Trinitron monitor

Go figure.

I -do- work for Dell {Product Specialist/L2) (at the moment. May change tomorrow, though).

Do NOT buy a 4100. 815 based pile of trash (the cheap labor Dell hires to put these things together don't even bother screwing in the hard drive sometimes. Often leave the ATX power connector disconnected. Had 2 BIOS revisions in development, 4 more in the field within 2 months of release. I could go on. I wouldn't be caught dead with a 4100).

Do NOT buy an 8100. Pentium 4, Rambus.

Do NOT buy an XPS B. Pentium 3, Rambus.

That leaves the Dimension LxxxR, which is an integraded piece of crap (810 chipset).

The only system Dell currently sells that I can even remotely recommend is a refurbished XPS T (BX chipset).

5) Would they like the extended 3 year next business day onsite warranty for $99 more (also covers monitor if purchased from Dell with the CPU).

WRONG.

Dell's onsite warranty only covers internal components. The default 1 year onsite, next 2 years parts only also convers the monitor. We will NOT, EVER, send a tech out to simply plug in the monitor.

6) Will they be doing any gaming? How much?

I'm sure you'll come out far cheaper if you go with the M64 (if you ask, you can get an ATI Rage 128) and buy the GeForce or Radeon 3rd party. Dell won't support it, though.

Dell's are overrated!!!!!!! Get a really nice HP

Haha... Dell/HP/IBM/Comcrap is on my sh!t list. :) Well, if I have to choose, I'd pick dell, cause they don't have a proprietary design like the rest. Still, I hate them all! :)

Heh. That was a valid service tag. May want to edit it out...

-edit- Nevermind, didn't catch you were pasting the specs for a refurb. Heh. That one was returned simply because the customer wanted a different OS.

Dell may be the lesser of the evils listed, but they're still pretty properietary.

Yes, this would be my recommendation :) The T series was probably the least problematic of any.

<< Rendus, how so? >>

Rather custom power supplies (has a 3.3V connector to the motherboard as well as the standard ATX). Nonstandard power supplies on some systems (8100 specifically. But at least that's a 330 watt, compared to the 200 in even the 1GHz P3 machines, or the 145W in the LxxxR), have some interesting release mechanisms (PS blocks parts of the motherboard, have to move it out of the way). Control panel (reset/power/HDD LED/power LED) is nonstandard, one bundle of 16-20 wires in a 2xwhatever connector instead of seperate connections for each (can't replace with a normal MB from what I can tell). That's all I can think of at the moment, but there's more. Some funny things that just make you say "What the hell?".

?What the hell? indeed. I had no idea about those little differences. Thanks for the info... this gives me another reason to hate Dell. :)

1) With or without a monitor? Does your friend already have a monitor?
HE NEEDS A MONITOR

2) How do they plan on using their Dell?
GAMING/INTERNET/PERSONAL OFFICE

3) Do they want a CD-RW or will they add that on lateR?
THEY WOULD PROBABLY LIKE ONE BUT DVD WOULD BE PREFERABLE

4) DVD?
WOULD BE NICE

5) Would they like the extended 3 year next business day onsite warranty for $99 more (also covers monitor if purchased from Dell with the CPU).
THE 1 YEAR SHOULD BE FINE

6) Will they be doing any gaming? How much?

NEW 32MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS with MDK2 Action Game

NEW 64MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce2 ULTRA GTS w/DVI Graphics w/MDK2

THE 32MB GTS WILL DO FINE FOR HIS NEEDS

the floppy drive doesn't work in other systems, from what i can tell. thats the only other thing i've encountered with my dells. makes it really annoying when you want to upgrade, can't use case, ps, or floppy with another motherboard. other than that seems pretty standard. when my geforce's fan started acting up i got a new board (much better overclocker, btw) in a couple of days.

what do you know about the 3800's death scream problem?
