What's the best deal right now for a laptop with:

It all depends on your applications and expected performance...

Good deal is a basic laptop for $400, but $1500 is a good deal for a gaming machine, too...

I would just wait for the Black Friday deals, and get the notebook tailored to your needs...

Good luck!

OK, well you can't legally put OS X onto it, so you might want to not mention it again.

Never said I was going to do anything illegal. I just want to make sure the system meets OS X specs in case Apple decides to release something in the near future.

I do not think that there are any specific brands to avoid, but I have my personal favorite, and it is HP/Compaq.

Solid quality and excellent support website with all the BIOS', drivers and software available just by typing in your model number.

And I believe that the performance of the AMD Turion CPU's is basically equivalent to the mobile Core 2 Duo 5000 series. You might want to take a look at those as well, especially that thay are usually a few hundred dollars less expensive that their Intel counterparts.

UPDATE: Just noticed that the Toshiba above has the HD DVD-ROM Drive. Not bad for $899...

Thanks for the input. I did a lot of digging at the notebook review site and then went shopping. The HP's I saw had way too many blinky LEDs in view. Compaq was limited to selection. Lenovo's are nice but a little more than I wanted to spend. The Gateway I looked at scared me--the screen flexed and distorted images way too easily. The Toshiba's were ok, but didn't have the feel I was looking for.

I stumbled across the white Sony that was on sale at BB for $649. I liked it, but no stores within 100 miles has one. So, I ended up going to the local Sony Style store. The had the NR180 on sale for $750 so I bought one of those. I like the clean lines and bronze color.

C2D 1.5GHz, 200G HDD, 1G DDR2, A/B/G. Nothing fancy--just clean and simple.

I was going to suggest a Dell 1520 or 1720 but I guess it's too late. They have a $250 off $1K or $425 off $1399 coupon going.

I got a 2.0GHz T7250, dual 160GB HDDs, 1920 X 1200 screen, 1GB RAM, and an extra power adapter and case for $1100, and ordered 4GB of DDR2 from Newegg for $160.

I'm thinking you'll want to put another 1GB stick of memory in there, especially if you're running Vista.

I guess I'm too late here too however for anyone alse reading this thread I can recommend the Acer Aspire 7720 for £640. The specs seem pretty good to me for a lappy too...

Its not really suitable for full on gaming but I didn't want a gaming laptop but for everything else (apart from the graphics) its almost as fast as my desktop machine....I mainly use it for my photography work running multiple apps with ease. For instance I can have Photoshop CS3, Adobe Lightroom, Media Player and burn stuff to disk without any problems at all.

The only critisism I have is that the battery as it only lasts about 2hrs from a full charge so a spare batt is a good idea with this machine.

C2D @ 2Ghz T7300
2GB DDR2 Ram
160GB HDD
Intel X3100 graphics adapter
Crystalbright 17" WXGA+ screen
Vista ultimate (Comes with Premium)
Lightscribe DVD-RW

Fraggable- Fedex just delivered the memory that I ordered from Kingston Technology. 🙂

orbiter- The thing that irritates me about the VAIO that we bought is that the spare batteries are REALLY expensive. Standard capacity is two hundred bucks and large capacity is three hundred. :Q We're going to try to go without a spare for now and hope that someone makes a generic for it soon (this is a new line for Sony, so I don't think they're available from anyone but Sony yet.)

Bryophyte -- I know what you mean about the spare batts :Q I think instead of buying more most folk try and stay closer to the mains 😀

Well, personally, I think you did it the right way - the same as I did...

When I was looking for a lappy, I felt like Goldilocks - this one is too big, that one was too small, I didn't like the looks, or the speakers sounded crappy, yada, yada, yada.

I was getting kind of desperate! Then, I found my Toshiba...

I digress... The same thing happened when I was looking at HDTVs (for 2 years). When I saw my Sony, I knew that was the one!

Anyway, have fun with your Sony notebook!

The battery situation sucks, but truthfully, I've only used my battery a handful of times, since I bought my lappy. I discovered that every wall in America has an AC outlet on it - sometimes more than one...

Batteries DO come in handy at airports, on airplanes, at Starbucks, et cetera, so keep it around for emergencies! 😀
