What's the best cpu for around $200.

For gaming or heavy overclocking, E8400. For multitasking/video encoding and using multithreaded apps, Q6600 G0.
 
Good suggestions all around.

The E6750 is the best CPU under $200 though.
Just thought I'd point that out.

Not any more. E6750 is not a good buy with the E8400/E3110 out and the Q6600 available for $200.

Dual vs quad, which do you want?

Dual = higher MHz, better (in general) for gaming, "light" use

Quad = lower MHz, better for multicore aware programs (video/audio work).

Both are really good either way you look at it, the Q6600 might be a bit more "future-proof" (whatever that means 😀 )
 
Thank you all for your input. After researching all of the sugestions, I couldn't go wrong with any of the cpus you guys suggested. More than likely I'll be going with either the E6750 or the Q6600. The E8400 is not available at newegg ($240.00). Its also out of stock at zipzoomfly, but even if it was with a price tag of $280.00 is just a little more than what I want to spend. The question now is; Do I want to spend $65.00 dollars more for the Q6600? Or to save that $$ and go with the E6750. I'll sleep on it, lol.

I'd go with the Q6600 if you're near a Microcenter. Otherwise, E6750. Or, if the E8400 magically becomes available for around $200, I'd get that. But we all know that's not going to happen anytime soon.

I feel the E8400 ,, as there are few programs capitalizing on the quads 4 cores !!
The 6750 can't hold a camels flea to the E8400 or Q6600
If ya can wait rumor has it Intel will begin supplying E8400 & possibly E8500 in a couple of weeks !!
they're trying to clear inventory of older, hotter, slower processors that are in stock now !! can't blame them..
