i used artic silver last time i put it on. never taken it off. but now i just got a new CPU/mobo setup. whats the best way to take off the heatsink (both Socket A...so old heatsink should fit on new CPU)

oh btw its a thermalright SK6 heatsink
 
Carefully, with a flathead screwdriver. Don't wanna slip and ::scrape:: there goes your motherboard.

no no. im talkin about taking off the heatsink from the CPU itself...AFTER you take them both off the mobo. CPU shoud be attached to the heatsink due to the artic silver

you worry too much, just pull the damn heat sink up, they both should pop out - it doesn't damage the chip. i've done it before.

If your cpu comes off WITH the heatsink, then you have much, much, much bigger issues.

If your cpu comes off WITH the heatsink, then you have much, much, much bigger issues.

Yes, that you do. Do you know what you're doing? The heatsink will unhook from the Socket, and then you can slowly pull the heatsink up, or use a little twist motion, or a slide motion if you don't want to pull up. This isn't a P4 so you will not have a problem like the heatsink sticking very strongly to the CPU.

EDIT: And no, the CPU should NOT be attached to the heatsink because of Arctic Silver. The Epoxy on the other hand, well you're screwed if you used the epoxy. In the hundreds of times I've taken heatsinks off of Socket A processors, I've never had them stick like that. P4s on the other hand, I've had quite a few scares where the CPU came off with the heatsink when it was still locked in place 🙁
