I wondered this considering this new thread on the Apex 3201.

Since so many ppl have said that this thing is going to skip and that you have to upgrade this BIOS, and that...and press these buttons and that... which I rekon wouldn't be too tough, I just wonder, what IS the best bang for the buck DVD player in your opinion? Also, this also makes me wonder, what is the very best DVD player out there?

There isn't a "best" DVD player on the market. All of them excel in different areas. I went with the JVC SA70BK since it offers progressive & standard mode, DD/DTS decoding, DVD-Audio playback, plays CD-R, CD-RW and MP3. It sells for less than $250 @ some .com stores.

It offers a superb picture on my 16:9 HDTV. However, some discs aren't properly flagged so you need to do it manually.

I'd say the "best bang for your buck" goes to Apex. If you don't really care about a DVD Player which can play any type of CD media and isn't region hackable then I would consider a JVC, Toshiba, Panasonic or Sony.

For cheap($89 at Sams) I like the Daewoo 5700(I have one also). Its extremely easy to "upgrade". The picture is perhaps not as strong as the Sonys or Pioneers but its very natural without too much artifacts/noise. Suprisingly, it is better constructed and styled it seems, than many sub $250 players out there, which are pretty crappy build to begin with. As for THE best, its probably one of the Sony ES players or on higher up, you have the more esoteric players.
