Thankfully Windows 7 will take care of *most* of the need for codec packs.

CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net) or VLC (http://www.videolan.org)

Some codec packs install dozens of codecs, most of which you won't ever even need. Best of all, they have high chance to either not work or conflict with each other. Go with well known reputable minimal codec packs like the CCCP. Or just use a player like VLC. Once you install a misbehaving and bloated codec pack, chances are you will never fully get rid of it short of formatting HDD.
