Hi, I'm thinking about upgrading my PC which is a 400MHZ Pentium, but only have around 400 bucks. I was wondering what's the best chip I can upgrade to for around $400.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Depoends on what else is in your current machine and where current parts will take you or how much you will have to replace. What motherboard/RAM/etc?

If you're talking about JUSt a processor, well, you've set yourself aside more cash than most of us would. ;) That'll get you the fastest processors out there.

If you're talking about an entire system for that amount of cash, you can still get a good Duron setup for that much. Need more specifics though.

You should be able to get a fast Athlon (1.2 Ghz from NewEgg) for about $120, a good heatsink for about $40 (Taisol 760092), a new motherboard for about $130 (Epox EP-8K7A, again from NewEgg) and 256MB DDR RAM from Crucial for $60. Totals out to $350+ s/h and you'll end up with a smoking fast system. Take the $50 and put it towards your "get me a new videocard" fund. Once that reaches about $140 you can pick up a GeForce 2 PRO 64 MB (MSI StarForce 831 @Newegg) and you'll be even happier, if you do any gaming.

Garion has an excellent line-up there.
However, i would change (1) thing: Get the VolcanoII for $13 instead of the $40 fan he suggested. The VolcanoII will be fine for an average user. Now you have $27 more to add to your $50 video card fund. Use the $77 you can get a Radeon LE AGP card from Newegg.

Now we are talking nice setup!
