What's the best cheap seti rig??

Probably a P4 chip with a mATX mobo, 256 MB ram, no hd. You can actually run seti just off a floppy (I run it off a cd with no hd).

My choice would be : AthlonXP 2500+,Cheap mainboard but doing 200MHz FSB, 128 Mb PC 3200, windowsNT then get the FSB as high as possible. 😉 🙂

Fry's had a $199 box for sale last week. Athlon Sempron, 128MB of RAM, 80GB HD. I don't think I could build one for less.
It had Lindows on it, but that could be replaced if needed.

the cheapest would be whatever system you can find for free 😉

if you want something with some speed, I agree with the AMD (barton core) idea, or if you can swing it, the cheapest P4 HT enabled box you can get. (running dual channel memory of course)

2400m 45w $80
hsf $20
NF2 motherboard $60
256mb cheap ram $40
case/ps/fan $50
dirt cheap/used HDD, $20

$270, should get 10 wu's a day comfortably.

if OCed.

I got the same chip, but picked up a whisperrock 2(or falcon rock, not sure) hsf & saved about $6, nf2 shuttle board for $55, 512 of that mushkin basic from outpost that was on sale, the 80gb wd from BB for for something like $15.xx after 10% off & rebate, & one of theose combo antec cases that comes with a psu for I believe $65 or so. Same total, but it looked quality enough, that you wouldn't know it was a bargain. Hell, I even got grandpa a 17in dell with dvi for $242 also. Just like he said, about 10wus a day. Of course, with rebates involved, you'll have to get your uncle or someone else to buy more then one.

thanks guys, this wu crunching really is addictive and gives me an excuse for building new comps 🙂

I bet it's even possible build a cheap blade server capable multiple instances of seti at the same time...I know some of you already have a similar setup. 😉

I would love to convert all this cruncher space into a nice compact blade server that puts out a ton more, but I couldn't imagine the cost.

IMHO, the best way to accomplish this is to send an email to all your friends with the links they need to sign up and crunch under your account! I don't know if this would be considered unethical in any way, so please be gentle if I just posted kindling and a match.
