I'm looking for a drive to go with my Sony dvd burner. Whats the best performer. Cost is not an issue - Also looking for a black bezel drive if possible.

I would love to know the answer to this one too. It looks like it is between the Lite-on, and the LG? I would love to hear people's responses to this:)

Anybody else have any recomendations? What are the advantages to each of these drives, e.g. Which drive is most compatiable to various media, which is the quietest, fastest, etc..

1. Liteon
2. LG
3. Plextor
4. Samsung

How come no one gives the Pioneer a thought? I have had their DVR 105 for a while now. It works just fine and the price is really good too :) ... I heard they have the DVR 106 coming early this month.

Do you know where to get the Samsung in Black, and did you get the 8mb retail version? Also what's the real advantages with 2mb buffer vs 8 mb buffer?

Maybe that's because the question did not ask for a DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW combo but a simple CDRW/DVD combo. You can buy 3~4 CDRW/DVD combos for that price.

I have 2 plextors & 1 samsung (returned 1 LG)... the Plextor is rated slower, but its quiet, looks great (black), in my opinion - does everything better for me than the faster rated samsung... My plextors read cd's & dvd's faster & much less noise, the samsung burns cd's a small bit faster sometimes (not always with all files/cdrw's), but the plextors fast still - plus i have never had a bad disc when buring with the plextor (only 2 so far with the samsung - but i burn many driver cd's etc...).

googlegear.com & gamepc.com both sell both combo DVD/CD/CDRW drives...

From what I understand...not much real benefit to 8mb to 2mb, cept less slowdown on read/write operations. I got the 2mb version...I don't burn a lot of stuff and I'm never in a big, huge hurry for it. THey have the black 2mb version at newegg for $70.

Are the Plextors as compatable with various media, as with the Samsung? If so, I would really prefer a quiter drive. Also, what model Plextor do you recommend?

Thanks for the input on the plextor, but I was looking for a drive that's got better specs. The Plextor only offers 20X CD-R, 10X CD-RW, 40X max CD-ROM, 12X DVD-ROM.

i would recommend the liteon ones at newegg. they are multi-read, and can read the DVD discs your sony writes.

Samsung... It's a little expensive, but it's the best one out there.

Those of you who keep saying Lite-On's are the best, you really really need to start using other brands to see what you are missing out. I used to buy Lite-On's all the time, because they were so cheap. They are cheap for a reason guys. Do yourself a favor and go buy Samsung or Plextor/Pioneer and tell me Lite-On is still the best.

agreed...lite on is good, but plextor/samsung etc are really good/great. And the Samsung is less than $10 more expensive.

you are so right... I did/was the same thing. The Samsung/Plextor/Pioneer run with less noise and more true to specs as well.
