Whats the best CDRW drive these days?

Im lookin to upgrade my Yamaha 4x4x16 burner that I bought 2 years ago. It's having a hard time burning CD's lately and I've tried cleaning with those drive cleaners but that doesnt work. I'm not sure whats wrong with it, but I think I want a faster drive anyways.

I've read a few reviews but am now wondering what the hardware guru's at anand think I should get.
Im in the market for IDE btw.

I got a AOpen P6 BX mobo, if a writer is ata 66 or 100 can I still use it?

I would personally get a Ricoh MP9120, it's a 12x10 CDR with Buffer Under Run protection, and it can also read DVDs at 8x.

The best CDR out there is probably the plextor 16x10x40, though I wouldn't personally buy it.

What you want is the Plextor 16/10/32A burner. ATA66/100 devices are always downward compatible... so it will work in your BX board.

Of course there is also the Plextor 24/10/40A but.... i donno if you want it that bad 🙂

LOL 24x.

Well i spent 500 CDN on my yamaha drive when it was out. All other drives were like 1 and 2x at the time.

Well, any recent PLextor, Yamaha or Richoh will suit your needs as they are generally the best. I personally use the 12x10x32S plextor and love it. Ive used some ricohs and never had any problems. Others on here use yamaha and swear by them. The consensus, I believe, is that anything from Philips blows monkey chunks. Also, I dont know if they have any ATA/66 burners as Ive always used SCSI models. But Im sure someone here will tell you. Good luck.

I just read thru a rather long CDRW thread (it was older) and the consensus was 75% of all plextors go bad within a year. And some of them even stop workin within a few months. I'm wary of plextor after reading that thread. I'll probably just go with yamaha again I guess.

Which website do you guys order your parts from??

Check the HotDeals forum for some good deals on the TDK 12x/10x/32x. I, too, had the Yammy 4x/4x/16x that I got in January 1999 (for US$400!) It still works well, but I picked up the TDK at CompUSA for US$129 and it has a US$50 Mail-in Rebate - US$79! Great deal! I think the CompUSA sale is over now, but there are some other places online that have about the same deal.

scsi plextors are all excellent-

i have a lite-on 12/10/32 IDE w/ burn proof that i got for $79.99 at best buy after a $20 rebate about a month ago. best ide burner i have ever used.
