What's the best CD ripper and mp3 encoder?

In the past, I heard it was Exact Audio Copy combined with LAME encoder, but frankly, my LITE ON DVD and burner won't work with EAC, so I'm looking for the next best ripper.

Has it changed since then? or is EAC still the best? Thanks!

well, i'm using liteon DVD & CDRW... and it works fine.

alternatively.. my favourite ripper was Audiograbber. then i encode the WAV with RazorLAME

I had problems with EAC and Lame after I installed the Intel Application Accelerator. For some reason, neither my Pioneer DVD or my 48x Lite-on would be detected. And as soon as I uninstalled it, both programs started working again.

EAC and Lame are my choices for CD audio ripping and mp3 encoding (though I now prefer oggdropXPd as ogg files are 1/2 the size of mp3s, and Winamp reads/plays both equally well).

if you can't get EAC to work on an Intel board after installing the Intel Application Accelerator, try installing newer ASPI drivers, as this fixed the problem on my computers.

Actually, I'm not using an intel board, I have a 1.2 Tbird and a KT266A chipset. I have no idea what's wrong, I've tried the newest version of EAC, and diff things, but it just won't work.......🙁

I had a problem with my Lite On DVD player not detecting the audio cds. I downloaded the ASPI file from Nero's website (free download) and saved the file in my EAC directory. EAC has worked fine since.

In EAC, tried going to EAC -> EAC Options -> Interface and changing it to the one you're not using? I had this same problem and it drove me crazy for a while (it worked before I reformatted) then I changed to external installed ASPI interface and it finally worked 🙂

Another vote EAC + LAME. 😀

That's weird, I had no problems running EAC with LiteOn drives. I have used LiteOn 16x DVDROM, LiteOn 24x CDRW, LiteOn 52x with no problems with EAC... I don't use the Nero ASPI though, I been using ForceASPI.

Does anyone know of any encoders/players that support the SBR (spectral band replication) extensions to MP3?

Apparently, these allow you to encode at lower bit rates (e.g. 96 kbps while maintaining 128 kbps quality), while maintaining backward compatibility with MP3 (although a player without SBR support will only offer the lower quality - in the above example playback quality would be approx 96 kbps).

I think this is also called MP3Pro, but I've not really followed it.
