what's the best cd burner software available? I need one that's free if possible. Also it needs to handle all the copy protection stuff.

well they're not free, but the best cd copying program is probably cdclone, and for all purpose, i like nero.

my favourite software for 1:1 backups is cloneCD.

It's not free but you can d/l a trial version here you need a serial number for using all the features (shouldn't be difficult to get - you could buy one ;) )

I am yet to find a cd that cloneCD could not handle. AFAIK Safedisc2 protected disks could be a problem.

In the trial version of CloneCD there is no option to drag-and-drop individual files; would this be available with the full version? I also don't see an option to handle ISO files.

I like Nero for general purpose burning and CloneCD for making image backups.

Nero and CloneCD are a must, get CDRWin for the occasional iso burning.

I have Nero and it's working fine for me...I haven't used CloneCD yet, but I think I'm going to give it a shot based on the opinions that I've just read.

I think there are programs that can do all the those things, but some programs can do a task better than others, and that's why those guys are using 2 different programs to copy CDs.

Hope this helps.

Nero will burn .bins and .isos just fine, the only thing it cant handle are ccd files.
If you are looking for something to buy you would be best off getting Nero. CloneCD is only good if you are doing backups of copy protected CDs.

There are things that Nero does well, CloneCD does well, and ECDC does well. And there are others . . . but so far, the only one that can convert analog tapes and records to digital format is ECDC. As far as what it can do, it wins. Nero cannot do analog conversions at all. But, what it does, it probably does more efficiently with less user intervention.

As far as "free" goes . . . you get what you pay for in most cases. :)

I'm having a problem making backup copies of a few M$ cd's. I can't copy Combat Flight Sim, Flight Sim 2000. I have tried EZCD5 basic, and also Clone CD full version. Some files are skipped. I even tried dragging to my hard drive & then to the cd, still no luck.
I tried from my wife's computer (She has NTI on hers) no good.
I'd rather not have to get Nero. Any ideas ???

If cloneCD can't do it, then probably nothing can on your existing hardware. Some CD-RW drives are more versatile than others. Plextor and Lite-On (latest) seem to do miracles with cloneCD. Toshiba DVD-ROM drives seem to be the reader of choice for cloneCD.

Also, see GameCopyWorld for a lot of ideas on how to backup your software CDs.

Thanks for the info.
I have a 16X TDK on my system & thats where Clone CD is. I have updated the firmware. My wife has a 16X Lite On, maybe I'll try Clone CD over there.
Has anyone else had these problems?

Thanks

For those of you that said you use 2 progs, I thought that you could only have one burning software installed at a time - do you install/uninstall as a program as needed? Or, is there a secret to having 2 programs installed at once.
I would really like to use clone cd for a few selected jobs ;), however it currently is not worth the hassle of re-installing my current software and then re-configuring it, that was a hassle configuring my cd-rom and cd burner since the software wanted to take over both of the drives.
Just curious . . .

CloneCD and Nero work beautifully because they don't take over your computer like some programs I installed with my first cd writer. No need to install and uninstall.

Clone CD seems to get along with other CD programs. I have it with EZCD on one computer & NTI on another. Did't get any conflicts like when I was going to put NTI with EZCD.
