What's the best CD burner for burning whatever I darn well feel like burning.

I haven't done the research (please, I would but I've got too much already on my plate), but when I want to use something like Alcohol 125% to burn a dupe I don't want to find out that it can't do this or can't do that, etc.
Maybe I just have a problem with being told what I can or can't do with "my" pc games.
And for that matter, I'm tired of repurchasing pc games cause kids ruin them when I can make ONE copy and keep the original locked up till one kid frisbies the other's game disk.
No, I won't beat them.

How's this one?
Lite On 52x24x52 Black CDRW Model LTR-52246 OEM

I forgot that this may involve a good ripping drive, so how's this for reading whatever subtleties (tracks, subtracks or whatever):
LITE-ON XJ-HD166/XJ-HD 165H 16X DVD ROM Drive BLACK

Heh, i sense a little tension! ;):)

I haven't had any problems making copies of anything with my LiteOn burner, and they're pretty well priced too! :) If you've got the money, i think that Plextor are probably one of the best :)

Many of the kid's games don't have no-cd patches. Where I can use such a patch I will.

The rest of the truth is I just got this really cool case that begs for a black cd drive or dvd drive instead of the sick beige and I would like to get the right drives that rip and burn the best.
So, as long as I am getting new hardware I would like to solve the problem I've posted to.

I have both those drives, in black too just like you. It's a great combo, I've never had a single problem with either. However, the "Smart Burn" technology is a little odd. It detects my older media as 32x capable, but when burnt at 32, it can't read the data back. Dunno why, but that's just what I had to contend with.

no drive supports easy copying of all things now. sure you can still get by using tricks sometimes, but its not easy anymore.

I just didn't want to be limited at the get-go by purchasing the wrong brand/model drive.
Anyway, it's too late for the burner. I've already ordered the Lite-on.

I have the CD-RW you're getting (in black), and I love it. I use 32x Memorex 700MB CD-Rs and using NERO, it always says they burn at 52x... a full 700MB CD will burn in about 2½ minutes including the buffering and preparing it does at the beginning.

you shouldn't have any trouble with the lite-on. CDRW's are tricky (some brands are known to be crap...), but for CDR's:

generic CDR + max burning speed = coaster at 52X speed

i used these 48X certified OPTIMUM CDR's (free after rebate generic) and burned at 48X on a lite-on 48125 (48X burn 12X rewrite) and the audio CD skips. burn again at 40X and no problems. now i put it at 32X just to be safe.

burning a nice CD at 32X is always faster than burning 2 coasters at 52X

I love my lite-on . Fast and real silent. I think the exact model as yours too.

GameDrive
Are you tired of scratching or losing your favorite PC games?
Is it annoying to swap game discs in and out of your drive and wait for them to load?

GameDrive uses its innovative technology to emulate your computer's CD/DVD-ROM drive, which enables you to run PC games directly from your hard drive without the use of the physical CD/DVD-ROM drive or the actual disc. GameDrive is a MUST HAVE for gamers.

-How does GameDrive work?
GameDrive does two basic things: (1) It can copy an entire CD/DVD into a single, compressed disk-image file that resides on your hard drive, and (2) It contains a driver that fools Windows into treating the disk-image file as if it were a physical CD/DVD running in a physical CD/DVD drive.
GameDrive lets you create up to 23 virtual CD/DVD-ROM drives and an unlimited number of CD/DVDs. Since you have 23 CD/DVD-ROM drives on your computer instead of just one, you can run more than one disc simultaneously.
So, after you have installed GameDrive, all you have to do is insert the game disc that you want to copy into your CD/DVD-ROM drive and click 'Build' on the GameDrive interface. In minutes, the virtual image of the game disc, called a 'VCD' will be shown. To run the game, just insert the VCD into one of your virtual drives.

Does GameDrive work with copy-protected games?
Yes. GameDrive works with all four of the major copy protections used on the most popular CD/DVD-ROM games: SafeDisc, SafeDisc2, Securom and LaserLock. Some examples of the games that work with GameDrive are: Battlefield 1942, Grand Theft Auto 3, Madden 2003, WarCraft 3, SimCity 4, Sims: Unleashed, Sims: Deluxe, Mafia, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 and many more. Note: If you are interested in using audio CDs or DVD videos, refer to our VirtualDrive product.

Just make disk images with AC120% and keep them on the HDD or network (heck even burn the image then just mount them in AC120%)

If you wanted DVD capability as well, I have a Toshiba SD-R1202 that I am very pleased with. Max burn speed is only 16X, but you can rip -anything- with it. DVD's, game CD's, audio CD's, it handles everything. I use CloneCD for imaging CD's, Exact Audio Copy for music CD's, DVDShrink for DVD's, Nero for burning, and Daemon Tools to virtually mount images. All of these programs rock.
