Whats the best brand for video card?

I'm fixing to buy a new vid card to upgrade my current MSI X600XT. There are so many different brands that I'm not sure what one to get.

MSI's and Gigabytes cards both look good but wondering if anyone knows who makes the best ones.I need pci-express. I would go with an Nvidia card but they dont have any 6800ultras PCI-E anywhere I can find, so it's ati for now. I mostly want it to play HL2,thats why i want to get it now so i can have it ready when it
comes out.
Also does anyone know when the X800XT PE will be available on PCI-express?
thanks,

William🙂

I think it's available now, but you're gonna pay like 600 bucks for it, since supply is so tight. I'd say the most cost effective solution is to sell your X600XT asap, since it's value is going to plummet as soon as all the AMD PCIe chipsets hit retail, and people start running en masse for the 6600GTs and X700XTs. (Yes, i know Intel has had PCI-express for a while, but a much higher percent of AMD's audience is the gamer, and they are likely to flock to these cards). Anyways, After you sell that X600XT, I'd go for the 6600GT. 9800XT performance for $200, not bad at all. Benchmarks show it is over double X600XT speed, sometimes even triple, like in Doom 3. The X700XT is also a good choice, but it's MIA for the moment, and it will run HL2 better than the 6600GT, but not nearly the ass-whooping the 6600GT gives the X700XT in Doom 3. HL2 should be very, very playable on a 6600GT. That's just my 2 cents, if you wanna shell out over half a grand, that's up to you, but the PCIe sweet spot right now is with the $200 cards, until cards like the 6800GT and 6800 make their way to PCIe (The 6800 is being redesigned to be more cost-effective, a la NV41, probably by physically omitting pipes 12-15 on the design, as a PCIe card).

gobucks, I do like the 6600gt cards but I'm really wanting a high end card . Right now I have Intel pc,but I want to build an AMD system as soon as the Nforce4 chipsets come out!!That way if I do upgrade my video card to a high end vid card, it will work in that system too,so it's not really wasting money for me.

But my real question is ,Is one brand of vid card better than others? Not like ATI VS Nvidia but MSI or Gigabyte VS ASUS vid cards. Some have better build Quality than others or better support.I dont really have any specific brand loyalty so any suggestions??

I believe the high-end cards like the X800XT are all made by one company for ATi, then sold to OEMs to resell to you. So I don't think brands will differ much beyond bundle, cooler, and warranty terms.

At this point, it would seem that the best X800XT brand is the one that's available for its retail price of $500, rather than the inflated prices we've been seeing. Here's a (partial) list.

Thanks Pete!! thats exactly what I was wondering.

On the link you gave I found a Gigabyte X800Xt for $495. plus free shipping from futurepowerpc.com:thumbsup:

Has anyone ordered anything from this site before?Hope they are not shady! I had another site I never heard of screw me over on a motherboard, got my money back after a month but never really got anything anywhere other than newegg and zipzoomfly.

I'm not familiar with futurepowerpc. Is it a Canadian site? If so, I think it's OK. Check Resellerratings.com, BizRate.com, and the BBB for a decent idea of how un/shady the store is. IIRC, ZipZoomFly has that same Gigabyte for about the same price, and I'm pretty sure they're up there with NewEgg as a reliable store.

I thought Asus had different ram, slower or something, but probably wrong. The saffire toxic may be the best if you can actually find one, has the vga silencer.

Unless you want to buy a X800 Pro VIVO that'll do the soft-mod to 16-pipes ala X800 XT PE. Sapphire's are good for this but not Built By ATI X800 Pro VIVOs.🙂
