Duron: 128k L1, 64k L2 = 192k useable
Thunderbird: 128k L1, 256k L2 = 384k useable

Thunderbird would be the better choice in a graphics workstation. I personally see very little difference between them in raw performance until you have heavy fpu loads. Even though they have nearly identical cores, the Thunderbird can handle heavy 3D and raw data-crunching slightly better.

If you are thinking of AMD solution, remember that the mobos for Duron/Tbird are more expensive than an Intel bx mobo. I happen to favor the AMD solution at present as long as the cost of the newer mobo is acceptable. It is also more sensitive to heat, therefor I stress higher end cooling for AMD doron or Tbird.
Any Intel BX or 815(815 mobo's are also new and more expensive0 with a 600 mghz PIII coppermine or higher will do everything you want to do in terms of applications and gaming.

Good luck;)

A Duron600/A7V is cheaper than a 600E/815 combo. The Duron will likely overclock equally if not better than the P!!!, too. The 815 motherboard may not have any room to upgrade inside of a year whereas the Socket-A board should be good for more than a year.
