Well I am taking my MSF classes this weekend. I know that, if I get a bike, it should be no more than 500cc and I could probably get a pretty good price since they lose value quickly. I'm looking for a sport bike and not a cruiser, and I've looked at Kawasaki and Suzuki options closely, but what else is pretty respectable in the 500cc range?

a great size to start on . . . .

i am assuming you are looking at the GS500 and the 500R

other bikes you might consider are the 600 class bikes, perhaps a Katana 600, YZF600 (not R6), or the ZX-6. The SV650S is also a nice bike.

i would definitely suggest going with used since you WILL eventually drop the bike and plastic is damn expensive

I'd say the Suzuki GS500e. Cheap, light, handles well, plenty of aftermarket stuffs for it if you wish, good resale value, reliable. That pretty much covers it. If you want something with a fairing, go for the Kawi Ninja 500. Buy a used bike tho...you're not going to keep a small-displacement bike for long, so you don't want to take the initial "hit" in resale value by wheeling a new one off the lot.

As Fausto says.. either one Ninja500R or the GS500 will do.

It bogs down to personal preferance. While they might say you will probably get rid of it in a few months, that is not true. I still have my GS and I plan to keep it. For my riding pattern its perfect. I dont need to replace it. Yes I plan on getting another bike but i am not goign to do it now. Maybe end of the year or so. Even so I dont think I will outgrow the GS. Its fast enough for me and I can hang in the curves with people with more expensive bikes. The idea is to get real comfortable with the bike so there is no use dumping it for a bigger one once you learn how to move on it.

Well enjoy your MSF course.. and do us proud.

How much do those bikes go for used, assuming decent mileage, good condition, etc.?

Well the bike I started on was a 600cc, and I would recomend a older 600cc bike or if you go newer go with either a Katana 600 like txgixer said, or a bandit 600.

A quick perusal of Cycletrader.com says anywhere from $1200 to about $3000 depending on age and mileage. They are a great deal for a starter bike.

This one is nice. Not so fast by current standards, but you won't take the hit on resale value.
LOL! Good luck getting spare parts tho....

"Uh, hello? Honda HRC? Could you put me through to Baba-San, please? I need a new clutch for my NSR500."

Exactly and a two stroke at that.

Elemental, be sure you get some gear with the bike. It will do you little good if you learn to ride without the proper attire. Spend good money on a decent helmet and at a minimum leather jacket and gloves. If you like your skin (hide) I would spring for a full leather suit and if you like your ankles/shins some boots as well.

Good luck, you are getting into a great sport

on a side note, any of you guys know where to get gear cheap online? or a search engine? something like pricewatch.com for gear ;) I'm looking at an Arai Quantum or an RX-7 and some Joe Rocket jackets/gloves.

Outta curiosity...how fast will a 500 cc bike go? 0-60? 1/4 mi?

How much different will this be than a 600 CC bike, like a Katana?

I do not know specifics, but I have ridden a 250 & 500 Ninja and a 600 & 750 Kat (the newer stlye 98? and newer) in the past. The performance difference between the Kat 600 and the 500 is pretty broad as far as power and acceleration.

However, that 600 is heavy and the handling is not all that great. There are a ton of mods for the 500 too. A lot of ppl use 500's at the track.

You have the right idea though to learn to ride in a smaller displacement bike before getting on something with a lot of power!

My favorite bike that i've ever owned was a Honda CX-500. The bike was loaded with recalls and engine problems, and i eventually drove the bike into the ground after the engine seized on me (not including leaving me stranded numerous times on the expressway waiting hours for one of my parents to get me). So far everything looks good from the previous posters.
