I'm looking for a fast, reliable and cheap 50-52X CD-ROM drive.
Any suggestions? The current 50X Mitsubishi that I have, although it has been very reliable, it sounds like a jet taking off!!

Cheers

I have used Creative Labs 48x and Sony 52x...

the CL cdrom is louder than the Sony 52x i have now..

My friend told me that his liteon cdrom is very loud at spin up...(and vibrate a lot)

Almost all high speed drives are going to sound like that. Try using This program to slow it down. It only works with some drives but it will allow you to set the speed. I use somewhere from 8-20X since it is usually fast enough while very quiet.

I just bought a 56x Acer here. I haven't used it much.....just to install os and various drivers/software. That was all on 1 day and I haven't used it since bring up that system. It didn't seem loud to me and I had no errors/faults while doing any installs.

Either the Asus or the LG.

LG makes a great quality drive for a good price, Asus makes a great quality drive for a good price... I find if the Asus can't read it, Nothing can...

I put a Sony 52X in my sisters PC. I don't like it. Even the tray is noisy when it opens and closes. I've had very good exp with LG drives. Very quiet and reliable. Dell uses them in their PC's.

Liteon is pretty good, but their rather loud.
Asus is decent, but nothing more.
Sony drivers are solid, as are LG drivers. Personally I'd lean towards LG as it's much quieter then most high speed CDROM's. I've got a 52X LG here and have been quite satisfied with it.

Ok, thats for the input. I can get the Asus, Liteon for $60, the LG for $64 or the Sony for $70.

How is the Asus in terms of loudness?

60.00 for a CDROM? My 27.00 Afrey 52X seems to work very well. Quiet and fast.

I have an ASUS 50X CD-ROM drive that sounds and feels really solid, but it sounds like a jet! There's a utility that slows down the drives rotational speed from ASUS.

Sorry, I probably should have mentioned that the prices were is Aust $. Does anyone know of any reviews for these drives? I'll have to look into it...

PS.... what is this "The next-generation DDSS II (Double Dynamic Suspension System II)anti-vibration design...." from the Asus site? Is it a load of bs?

There are 2 versions of the 50X ASUS drive. The old version (which you can no longer purchase) is much louder than the one currently on sale.

I do agree that if the ASUS drive can't read it, nothing can. But I have found that sometimes they can be slow recognising CDRWs....they can take a while to recognise and spin up....much longer than the Sony drive.

I would prefer the ASUS 52X over the 50X, since the 52X is a slightly newer design....the firmware might have the CDRW recognition bugs worked out of it.

Having said that, you can't really go wrong with any of the drives listed.

I recommend the LG 52x. It's fast quiet, and fairly sufficient at DAE.

I recommend:

TEAC CD-540E (40X)

the "white box" (OEM) of this drive will be ~$35 - 40 US $, but this drive performs excellent. Its very quiet, and lightening fast!!
