I was wondering what the best 24x CD-RW out there is for the price? I've been looking at the LITEON 24x10x40x and can get it for 100$ or less. I don't need a burner that's the best in everything, just overall good. Thank you!

Plextor is always is the best. Lite-ons are very close 2nd and you will be happy with either. If you have the cash, go for Plextor otherwise take the liteon.

I had the same exact choice to make -- Lite On vs. Plextor -- both 24x.. However, the Plextor was about twice the price, at least here.. So, I decided to give the Lite On a try and I'm very happy with it.. It has worked with both CD-R and CD-RW without any problems so far.. :)

I'm a Plextor fanatic by trade (particularly their SCSI writers), but I've been thrilled with the performance and ultra-low price of the Lite-On 24/10/40. You can get 'em as low as $75 (!) ... almost getting as cheap as a DVD-ROM of decent quality. The 24x PlexWriter is a beauty also, but (IMHO) it isn't worth twice the cost. YMMV. :D

PCworld had a rebadged Lite-On beating the plextor last month :) there is no contest with the 24x being around 80 bones! just make sure you keep it on it's own IDE channel! if you hook it up with the CD-rom or DVD might as well get a 16x as you cannot take full advantage of the 24X :)

I currently have a LiteOn 16x10x40 and it's great - I've only had one bad burn so far, and that was due a defect in the cdr disk.

I'll be upgrading to either the 24x10x40 or the 32x10x40(supposedly being released in January according to a local VAR). ;)

There's a big difference between merely winning test score comparisons vs. quality of construction.

The Lite-ons are decent drives, but quality-wise they don't compare to a Plextor. Plus, Plextor always seems to push the envelope/add on thoughtful extras ... things like a cooling fan. And back in the day when the first CDe's, CDi's, etc., were hitting the market, a Plextor drive was about the only drive that was capable of playing all formats ... Plextor was constantly tweaking/writing drivers as new stds. appeared. When a company goes to the trouble of writing a special driver for a single specific CDe (ie. enhanced CD) so that it will run properly, you can't help but be impressed. Such was the case with Todd Rundgren's "The Individualist" which was one of the very few decent CDe's ever released. Compounding the situation was that it was developed for the Mac, yet Plex got it working under Windoz.

I am now looking into the Yamaha CRW3200E, as according to Tom's it's one of the best. What's this I hear about the 24x having to be on it's own IDE channel? I have two Hard drives and a DVD-ROM (and a 4x4x24x cd-rw that i want to upgrade) so I really have no choice... Is this true? Is there a way around it? Thanks!

Tom Pabst sums it up quite well. You get what you pay for. The Plextor and Yamaha are expensive, but feature rich and perform best. The Lite-on is a best buy and works well enough.

<< From the tests carried out on these eleven 20x or 24x burners, we may conclude that, on the whole, most have satisfactory features and performance. We can, however, cite two in particular: the Plextor 241040A and the Yamaha CRW3200E. They have results as excellent as they are consistent, and, furthermore, they have an extended guarantee and after-sales service that the user will appreciate. The Yamaha is, of course, more expensive than the others, but it does have 8 MB of cache and advanced functions such as the Mount Rainier and Audio Master Quality Recording. Not far behind these two is the Teac CD-W524E, which offers solid, reliable performance, and is to be recommended.

Nor must we forget the financial side of burner purchase. Some of the cheapest include good burners like the Memorex 24Maxx (Lite-On 24x10x40), the Ricoh MP7200A or the Waitec Megalus. The TDK Cyclone 241040 and the Phillips CDRW2010 are no slackers either, when it comes to features or results, but they are somewhat more pricey than the others. The Hewlett Packard CD24ri is also rather expensive, and it is not perfectly compatible with low-quality media, so will not only be costly to buy but also to use. Finally, the Sony CRX175A, while not a poor burner, does not give consistent results, and some options are lacking or don't work properly.
