Folks,
What's the best 19" LCD for under $380???

On a budget here, and want to get rid of my 75 pound 21" Dell P1110 CRT.

I'd use the new LCD for surfing the Internet, working from home, and general office applications. No movies, but I like to game upon occasion and edit photos, so good color quality and response time would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your recommendations.

So far, the Viewsonic VX922 and Samsung 940b look promising.

I don't care that it's not HDCP/Vista compliant.

Cheers,

ViewSonic VP930b

The colors on this thing are vastly superior to both the VX922 and 940b. Viewing angle is also better. Response time shouldn't be far behind either. The 20 ms is a truthful spec (the 940b also hits ~20 ms despite its rating). The VX922 is faster but it's not worth the color sacrifice.

Samsung is vertically integrated. That means Samsung engineers get to do engineering, instead of being middlemen and being "supply chain managers", which is what happens to a lot of the engineers at tech facilities that do a lot of outsourcing.

i've worked at 2 places that were vertically integrated. when a problem came up, we fixed it. microwave network analyzers at one place, radar amplifiers and related power supplies at another place.

i have 4 samsung LCD's, 2 17", 1 19", 1 21".

other thing - don't take our word for it. find a store with a big variety and compare. sometimes the video splitters they use are low-fi, they don't really show you what the image is.

when i first bought the samsung 17", it was $400 and really caught my eye, as nice as the 20 inch Sony for $2000.

probably more important to buy one YOU like than anything else. & really hard to determine that without seeing the monitor in person.

I have the 940B and its awesome! I've played everything from Quake 4 to Oblvivion and have not seen any ghosting! The text shows up super sharp and the colors are just as good as any CRT that i have ever seen. i payed 350 for mine but i think they are down to 300 now. You should definitely get one! My friend liked mine so much he went and bougth the same exact one.

My Dell 1905FP is a very good monitor IMO (AT agrees). Got it for around $300 w/free shipping direct from dell after instant savings. They have deals like that every month or so.

Thanks for all the input.

Went down to the local Fry's and while they didn't have the Samsung 940b or ViewSonic VX922, they had the Samsung 930BF and the ViewSonic VX924.

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all they had them doing was running the fishtank screen saver, the ViewSonic's color reproduction was far more impressive.

Note that one would expect these monitors to be uncalibrated. Also, they did not have a performance FPS or movie demo running, so this could not be deemed a fair nor scientific evaluation.

I'm pretty tempted to order the ViewSonic VP930b.

Thanks,
