what's the ATI equivalent to a 7600GT?

not too happy with my 7600GT due to various driver issues, so I'm thinking of going ATI. what's the ATI equivalent to a 7600GT. I'm doing mostly HTPC and some light gaming. Most important to me is something with dual dvi and HDTV out, and h/w acceleration for VC1 and H264. and all the goodies for 3D gaming, though I don't expect to play with max details on 1080 res (1280x720 will do).

ndidia is pretty straightforward -- bigger # = better = more expensive. the whole ATI product scheme is confusing. I see some X800 card that cost $300-500, and some X1600 cards as low as $85

X1650XT is a little bit more powerful than 7600GT

X1650 PRO w GDDR3 memory is less powerful
X1650 Pro w GDDR2 memory is much less powerful

X1900GT is much more powerful than 7600GT

With ATI and NVidia due to launch their new midrange cards within 1 or 2 months, it is a good idea to wait.

It's not that much more confusing. Like ATI have the X800 and X1600 series, NVidia have the 6800 and 7600 series. Some cards may cost more because they don't make them anymore.

Don't think a card that costs more will necessarily perform better. Your best bet is to go to the NVidia and ATI websites respectively (if you fancy a new generation card), find the model name of a card that you think would suit your needs, then read reviews on those cards to see how it really performs. Or just look through tech sites for video card comparisons to find what would suit you.

what is your budget like?

do you want the "equivalent" or something faster?

You have to look at the second digit, not the first one. Similarly, a 7300gt is not better than an old 6800gt. From the Ati lineup, a x1650xt or anything faster will be at least as fast as a 7600gt.

The X1650XT offers roughly the same performance as an 7600GT but for a little bit more money you could get the MUCH faster x1950 pro!

 

[Remedy]

Here is a recent article from last week comparing the two. I'm not sure where you're shopping region is. But, an x1950GT should be about the same price as a 1650XT. While still providing more performance than the 1650.
