Yeah, I never really got it either.

But then again, I love to go the Symphony, and a lot of people are bored by that. shrug.

Despite what people say, it takes a lot of skill to pilot one of those cars around a circle 100+ times. Espically at 200mph.

While it isn't the most exciting thing to me, I suppose a lot of people just get a kick out of seeing the cars battling for position.

<< People only watch for the spectacular multi-car crashes. >>

Some people, definitely not all people.

If the people that watched ONLY watched for the crashes, they would be fools. Because of course you can easily catch the biggest wrecks on any sports re-cap program on Sunday night. There is more of a draw for some people than the wrecks.

I agree, although watching Nascar does nothing for me either.

Theres lots of strategy when you pull out of corner 3 with 2 cars behind you contending for 4th position, drafting off you to slingshot around and hopefully catch 3rd

i said i don't doubt, meaning that i do believe =P

the only thing i find amusing about it is (oddly enough) watching them try to manage fuel effectively

it's just so not right when you run out of gas on the last lap while in first place

One thing's for sure...

As long as they have these races I'll never worry about a gas shortage. Imagine how much gas these cars use. There must be races going on constantly around the world.

Don't get me wrong, I like watching nascar, not just for the racing, but for the wrecks and the stories and what not. But I mean come on, aren't most sports boring. I mean look at hockey and socccer, it can last for hours and sometimes no one scores, at least with nascar there is always a winner. What about baseball, I like it to, but it can be boring. Now football, thats a good sport to watch.

Of course it takes alot of skill and talent to drive like that. But the fact remains that it's boring. B-O-R-I-N-G.

Some people really bite into it and it excites them... others, like alot of us, don't see the big deal in it.

Most of the races at the two big tracks Daytona and Talledega can be pretty boring, especially if you aren't into racing. Hell, I'm a race car driver, and this Daytona 500 is boring the hell of out me right now. I like to watch the races on the shorter tracks, closer to the size I race on, which are much more exciting.

When I used to be into it, Bristol night races were can't-miss. I haven't watched a full race in years, though

I'll agree that watching on TV can be a bit boring, especially if you don't know what's going on...it's hard to appreciate.

But then so is golf,....most non-players think it's stupid to chase a little white ball around and hit it. I think soccer is EXTREMELY boring..........but look at its popularity in Europe.

Hockey is almost but not quite as boring as soccer...especially on TV. Actually, in person, too. But many people love that.

The one thing about most any form of auto racing is, most guys that like cars somewhat think that they could do it if given a chance. I think that's what a lot of the appeal is.
The reality is, most couldn't, but they think they can. It's pretty safe to say that nobody on Anandtech can run a 4.2 second 40 yard dash, so none of us are thinking we could be the next Darrell Green if we just tried out. But deep down inside, we all secretly think we could drive one of those cars well if we could just get a shot.

NO idea.. it's definitely the worst/most boring motorsport ever created.. I dunno why we can never create a good motorsport like F1 or Rally Cross, look at the other motorsports we have: mud bog racing (WTF?) monster trucks (WTF?) sprint cars (WTF?) They all suck really hard.. It's pretty sad.

Shouldn't that be "But look at it's popularity everywhere else in the world except USA" ;)?

I recently read about someone who mathmatically proved that all sports are equaly interesting, because they are all essentially a random walk, with their ups and downs which make for excitement. So it's just a matter of what type of sport interests you.

BTW, I don't think this applies to non sports like golf, bowling or curling. ;)
