me and my friends have been having a discussion lately on what the proper "spread" is between a guy and a girl dating. The accepted equation seems to be Your age divided by 2 + 7. So if you are twenty the spread is down to 17. What in your opinion is the proper spread? Does the previous equation work or is it a relative thing based on the maturity of those involved. Let's get this matter solved.

I think age/2 + 7 holds up well in most situations as an accepted age spread.

Age doesn't matter (as long as it's legal). If you connect with someone, who cares about age?

Usually 10 years or less, though I've seen it work well as much as 20. Obviously allowing for a reasonable starting age.

As long as they are old enough, yes.

So by that theory, a 20 year old is compatible with a 37 year old or a 3 year old?

(age of older person - age of younger person) / age of older person <= 0.125

So, you're saying that a 27 year old couldn't date a 32 year old? Two people who are 71 and 80 would be unreasonable? How about 40 and 34?

But, if you increase the .125 a little bit, you might just have a pretty good formula. Although, given the lack of mathematical ability in this country, only about 4 or 5% could ever use it. (in my experience - math teacher - I'd estimate that only about 2 or 3% even recognize .125 as a simple fraction)

Well that's just sad. However, as a former basic math tutor at my (community) college I can't argue with that.

The age/2 + 7 seems to work well in most cases, as long as the youngest is at least 18. Under 18 I think it's a much smaller range because you go through a whole lot of change between 12-17.

age/2 + 7 equation is fine but it shouldnt be used as an excuse to date HS girls once you have graduated.

My best friends growing up parents were 11 years apart and they're still married and have been for over 30 years.

I don't think age is all that important really.

the .125 equation is good, however i agree that it limits the spread in older situations. If you increase it to 2 then it works out much better. Just my own opinion.

I am 29 and dated someone who was 36 and it seemed to be a bit of a stretch. On the other hand, I'm dating someone who just turned 25 now and it is barely noticeable. I think that it can't just be a formula (BTW, the 36 year old could have dated someone who was 25??). It seems to depend on the person...

total bullspit...

agre spread is nothing as long as both parties are legal and like eath other...
the world does not need artificial rules to govern when and how 2 people can enjoy each other..

you religious and ultra conservative people trying to set moral rules make me sick..

i also like to believe the age/2 +7 rule...of course there's also the age*0 + 18 or 17 depending where you live.
