Does anyone knows what is that thin square like central piece located on that card? the pin traces can be seen on market products but i've never seen a card with that thing on!

Anyone have an idea?

It's a kanooter adapter... a whatcha-ma-jiggy cable plugs into that, and then into a kanooter for DX10 capabilities =)
 
Could be a early revision board with a slot for a debugging card... Don't quote me on that
 
how about memory upgrade slot? can that be possible?

Owners of ati cards, if you look at the card there's the layout of that thing already there just printed on the pcb
 
I think that this card is out of a Dell System and that connector is for a DVD Decoder Card of some sort. I have seen this on Nvidia cards that came out of Dell Systems. The card in the photo may be a 9700TX out of a Dell System.

Ummm no. ATi chips have DVD decoding circuitry inside. Very possibly it's the connector for a video-in daughterboard. I've seen it done like that on 9000 VIVO cards. It might also be used for a 2nd DVI output daughterboard.
 
I just dont like it when people say, "Ummm, no". Very annoying and disrespectful to me.
If I took it out of context (because it is very difficult to keep things in context with text) I apologize. I have had my fill
of know it all's and the " I know more than you do " guys. All serious input is valid. Expecially when someone is sharing their
information to assist others. Don't you agree?

So just to make sure you know why I responded the way I did, it was because of the "Ummm, no" comment. I hate it. I'm sure I am not alone.

I think not... it's definately a kanooter adapter. I've seen flux capacitors, and that is not one. It is unwise to make an assumption like that when you have your head up your arse!

Have some respect. You could have completely left the "Ummmm, no." out of that post and made your point just fine. Don't pretend you had all good intentions, when you ad a statement like that, your intention is to belittle the person you're responding to. Those kind of comments are what contributes to an unpleasent message board. If you know for a fact that someone's wrong, state the facts, support it with evidence, and your opinion will be respected. When you make comments with the intent to belittle others, it makes you sound like a teenager with no friends who belittles other's on the internet to make him/herself feel important.
 
I'm not from the land of euphemism-ism. And I won't cave in to that either. I'm an engineer, and in my profession, a no is just that, a no. If you take that personally, well, can't help that.

Just figure what YOU would have said had we been talking face to face. Person 1: <wrong statement>. Person 2: Umm no, <correction>. Now if P1 were to call me a smartass after that, he'd be fired in no time. At least in my company.

If you're talking about that rectangular connector jutting into the capacitors near the front of the card, I believe it was for an AiW daughter card that never materialized (thus newer cards tend to forego the connector completely, exposing the traces). If you're talking about that square black thing adjacent to and behind it, I have no idea.

As for the ongoing Miss Manners lesson, I have three whispered words of wisdom to impart: "Let it be."

(FYI, Gorillaman, the url to the picture indicates it's a 9600P board. I think 9700 boards are larger, not to mention they should have a three-pin power connector in the back corner.)
 
I agree, Let it be.. Thank you for correcting me on the board type. I was not aware that 9600's had memory in the L shape configuration.
