What's that stuff that hangs in the trees down south?

Spanish moss is a misnomer. It's actually a bromeliad in the genus Tillandsia, a relative of the pineapple.

I just checked out your website. The bug macros are absofvckinlutely fabulous.
I identified Cladonia Lichens when I saw your pics. I just did a survey on an old strip job and the open spaces under power lines were covered with the lichens to an extent I'd never seen before. It was amazing. I wanted to identify the plant and never got around to it.
Again, awesome photography. I'll look at the rest of the site later.

I've told him to go pro if he ever gets the chance. Best macro photography I've seen of his subjects, and I seem more than a few.

Yeah, I'm the freakin man.

Dude, I've said so. I have a friend who just retired as a professor who taught ecology and marine biology for 35 years. I gave him a gift of lichens and mosses that was as thick as a NYC phone directory. In all those plates, I didn't see better than what you have done.

/me lives in Tampa Florida...

Kudzu (aka Stinkweed) and Spanish Moss are both Non-indigenous species.

Kudzu does indeed smell very bad when pulled - there are no commercially available pesticides that will effectively remove it.

Spanish Moss is a parasitic air plant that feeds off the host it attaches to, and the moist humid air.

I have never seen the insects that are refeered to in relation to Spanish Moss.

I probalby have a ton of that crap in the trees in my year. (30 oak trees)

Not bein a smart ass, just helpin you out...
"Like Spanish Moss, Tillandsia setacea and Tillandsia recurvata are epiphytes. Epiphytes grow on the surface of trees and other plants only for mechanical support. Unlike parasites, epiphytes do not draw nutrients from the host plant, but absorb water and food from the air directly though their stems and leaves. Through the process of photosynthesis, the chlorophyll in the epiphyte converts water and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates. Other examples of epiphytes are certain tropical orchids and the resurrection fern."
Came from here.

The little bugs are actually not insects, they are mites. Specifically, Trombicula alfreddugesi. They're also called red bugs. Chiggers are extremely tiny but you can still make them out because of their bright red color. They actually lay eggs in your skin anywhere on your body where clothes are tightly touching your skin. Anything held in place with elastic especially. So don't go rubbing Spanish Moss all over yourself or anything stupid like that. The itching usually occurs several hours after the larvae attach to the skin. The larvae can sometimes be seen in the center of a red, pimple-like bump that has not been scratched. And that is rare because these things itch like nothing else.

It better not be black people.

that was the other that I was referring too

Being a Southernor automatically makes you a racist in some peoples eyes.

I didn't think it was a racist thing.

I just immediately saw something about something hanging from trees in the south and I could suddenly hear Billie Holliday as if she was standing right behind me.

Once you hear that song, it's impossible to escape the reference.

Huh? You know that song was based on actual events from the past right? Ones involving racism...

Yes but I don't make the connection because I'm a yank who believes that everyone in the south is a racist redneck.

Ah. Well, I don't think that one necessarily assumes that all sotherners are racist rednecks just because of the imagery of something hanging from trees evokes memories of a racist past in this country. At least I hope not, otherwise I'd qualify as well.
