Whats it called? I want to call it 'tar' but that's not getting any useful results. I don't even know what it does. Just curious how it works. I think it might be p2p based... I dunno... Ideas?

    It's called Tor:

    https://www.torproject.org/

It's basically a collection of proxy servers that allow you to connect to them through an encrypted connection, one by one, to mask your data and your location. Pretty cool stuff.

Keep in mind that software running within the browser, such as Flash, Java and some JavaScript may not obey the proxy settings configured by TOR.

I suggest using the Firefox plugin "NoScript" to block the majority of the rest of that.

Are there any programs that work like this for various game chat programs like vent etc? We get invited to different servers and I'd like to avoid risks.

Get a paid VPN if you want to be anonymous.

Except that in the US and a number of other countries, they'll simply hand over your info to the US government when requested.

    So... don't use that one?

There are plenty around that will at least claim not to do such things.

It may help the OP if you were to list the specific providers and link to their legal pages. Please provide links.
