I know what you're talking abt...it's the one on the hilly area on the right side of the 5 freeway before reaching Camp Pendleton proper. The compound is surrounded by high concrete walls. I think they did put the units name on it. Like you, I usually get curious when I pass that area.

Yup, it's a hovercraft base or maintenance area for LCAC as the navy folks call them...linky.
