what's special about nalgene bottles?

adelphi

Banned

is it the lexan polycarbonate (sp) material that it's made out of that gives it the property
of not absorbing the tastes/smell?
or is it just branding/hype?

Wrong.

While I agree most people do not use them for there intended task. They were origanally for climber/backapackers/etc..
The fact that you cannot smash them helps...while all of the things you mentioned are important.

They are kinda of like NORTH FACE jackets now.trendy and not utilized. I blame REI.

7$ is pretty damn cheap IMO

and butzilla you didnt fix anything, the fact that they dont retain smells or tastes, is one of the main reason people use them

Any avid hiker/backpacker will atest the greatness of the Nalgene bottle.

i dont really agree with that. i do a good amount of backpacking and have a nalgene. I do not carry though, ever since i got a platypus. The nalgene is a little heavy for my tastes. i would like to have at least one one bottle my the group though, as the bottles screw directly onto my MSR miniworks water filter and makes things really easy.

i'm an avid hiker, mtn biker, and snowboarder. maybe it's just my bottle...i take it back.

so in theory, u can poured out that motor oil, rinse it/soak it overnight, and it'll be good
as new, relatively speaking

so where and what are some alternate brands of similar type bottles to get?
i'm just gonna get one to bring to work so i don't have to run back and forth for water

i see em all the time at target and walmart. the one at target sells for 4 dollars made by eddie bauer (i think).

i remember back in aug when i hiked half dome, the shop near the curry village was selling them for 11 dollars a bottle...damn.

And I see them all the time at Target for < $2 on clearance. My girlfriend got pissed because I kept buying them 3 or 6 at a time until I had over 20. I just can't pass up a good deal!

Edit: that's the Eddie Bauer brand

I have one, and I don't know why people say it doesn't retain the smell of the liquid that's in there. Mine has a permanent aroma of gatorade now.
