If you're feeling adventurous, make a power supply. The basic design is fairly simple (should be in most textbooks) and you can scale up/improve as much as you want, to correct power ripples, surges, grounding, etc.

For project, nah. One of the labs in my electronics lab course was to design, model and build a power supply. I think it would be too simple unless he finds a way to make it really complex.

Build this, and let me know how it works. 
I've tried a few different LED candles, but not many suit me.
The worst ones just plain alternated between bright and dim, in a constant blinking pattern, like if a pulsar became a candle.
Better were the Philips candles, though a lot of their charm was due to their integrated NiMH batteries, magnetic linking capabilities, and charging circuitry. They also blinked, but it was slightly more random.
The best used two LEDs, one remaining on, and the other flickering. However, just as with many white noise generators, a repeating pattern was easily discernible after about 30 seconds of operation.
So I eventually came upon that circuit, which promises truly random output. I have yet to try it though.
(And I have no idea which 4103 chip it's after; Mouser doesn't turn up any stocked matches for 4103 CMOS.)

You need a diode unless you want to go all the way and get yourself a galena crystal. :Q
Sferics = lightning activity. A PV (solar) cell pointed to an active cumulonimbus cloud will produce an electrical output envelope that mimics the lightning strike. It can amplified and routed to a loudspeaker. The "crash" sounds very similar to what you hear on an AM radio...
LOL @LED candles. We obviously have to use 'em due to SOLAS and they are OK but they should use actual white LED's instead of yellow LED's. I did see one sample that had over twenty tiny chips and could be programmed to flicker completely randomly and have its colors adjusted. Very nice for "the mood".

something simple like a PID speed regulator is easy to do with op amp circuits.
In a circuits class I took we built analog phones that communicated through LED/photodiodes. You could get two of them to work from across a large room, it was actually pretty cool.

I doubt the breadboards he's talking about will be as reliable as you're looking for. They can be designed on a breadboard and have a PCB laid out in Eagle and some boards made relatively cheaply though.
