I need to expand my music collection.

What are some good bands from the 70s era that I might not know about. Obviously I knew led zeppelin, beatles, pink floyd... but Im sure there are some awesome bands that didnt last the test of time... well, what are they?

When you say download, you mean pay for the songs then download them correct?

Download legally I hope?

The Clash's London Calling album is brilliant. Blue Oyster Cult, BTO, Dire Straits, REM, Midnight Oil.....

In that case Rick Springfield.

Edit - to the OP, I have loads of recommendations but I'm not down with the whole "stealing form copyright owners" sh!t. Also I like to laugh at people who pay for illegal music.

An excellent gateway drug (errrr band) for progressive rock would be Yes.

Fragile and Close to the Edge would be two albums to typify the genre.

Definitely King Crimson. I love listening to In the Court of the Crimson King, Red, Starless and Bible Black, etc. They might be too avant garde for most people, but I think they're amazing. Early stuff from Rush is great too.

Odd recommendation ---> Gnidrolog - In Spite & Lady Lake (UK prog from 1972) Very strange, but engrossing vocals and music.
