What's so special about "rounded" floppy cables?

Like all rounded cables, improved airflow in the case primarily.

Another reason can be to help keep the case neat on the inside, some people access their system more than others and like to have it neat and organized. Personally, if you don't need that airflow and go in your computer less than once a week or two after the initial setup, you don't need them unless your case has a window and want it to look good.

i personally find it better to just cut up standard ribbon cables and wrap them up in electrical tape, they take up even less space than most rounded cables althouth they look rather ghetto...

Looks, airflow, easier to tuck away
Yep, yep, I don't know, it depends. I have found many times standard flat ribbon cables fold and tuck away much more easily than rounded ones. Many rounded cables I have seen tend to be a little rigid and do not tuck away quiet so easily.

I had rounded cables until I figured out I could route the ribbon cable better. It can be tucked behind things much easier and have you ever looked inside a rounded cable? The stuff is everywhere, whereas my ribbon is nice and orderly, hopefully eliminating crosstalk

I prefer rounded cables for all my drives because they are easier to work with and don't choke the system up as much.
