I loved them up until the "Disco Stones" album. I don't remember the name of it but I think the radio song from it was the one with the "I can't give it away on 7th avenue" line in it.

Led Zeppelin on the hand is a great band.
Led Zeppelin followed the path the Rolling Stones had already made.

IMO, the Rolling Stones are best rock band there ever was. They created hard rock and the path that led to metal. Everyone else followed. The funny thing here is that my respect for the Stones as musical innovators transcends the fact that I despise just about every member of the band as a person.
In Pulp Fiction, Tarantiro said there are 2 types of people, those who like the Beatles and those who like Elvis. I saw that and said, "Bullsh!t, what about those who like the Stones?"

Yeah, I don't see what's so great about them either. From 68 to 72 they only released those forgetable albums Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, and Exile On Main Street.

Show me one band that concurently released four albums that would go on to influence more music. I'll tell you what, it sure the hell wasn't Led Zeppelin.

Back when both them and the Beatles first came out there were two camps. Those who liked the Stones and those who liked the Fab 4. The Beatles were less Anti Establishment and more Pop than the Stones. Other Brit bands that followed were either in the Beatles camp like Herman and the Hermits, Dave Clark 5, The Who (very Popish when they first hit the scene) and such and then there were those who were in the Stones camp like Eric Burden and the Animals, Yard Birds and the like who were more bluesy and more on the hard edge. Back them I prefered the latter and didn't really become a Beatles fan until their fantastic Album "Revolver". The Stones and those like them followed more in the Footsteps of the Great Blues Bands of Black America where as the Beatles, while fans of those same Blues Musicians appealed more to the High School girls.

Now I don't feel that the Stones are in the same category as the Beatles when it comes to song writing, especially after the Beatles shed their Teeny Bopper personna, but they had as much of an influence on Rock n Roll as the Beatles and Elvis.

Heh. I'm listening to Sticky Fingers right now. It really is one of the best rock albums of all time.

Really good post here, Red. Very true all of it. But of course you were there while I was not. ;):D

And for those who may not have caught it, Yardbirds = Led Zeppelin. Text

The only great thing is they sang the song Paint it black, the rest of their music is just not interesting to me, at all.

Great band, tons of great songs, but I haven't liked many of their songs since about 1980. There's a few good ones but it's just not the same quality as their music in the 60's and 70's.

For those who may not have known when Page first started with the Yardbirds he was their Bass Player to Jeff Becks Lead Guitar for that group before Beck left and Page took over Lead. Before Jeff Beck joined the YB's Eric Clapton was their lead guitarist.

I enjoy the Stones, but I'll admit that I'm really only a casual fan. Red and Vic, do you guys have any recommendations for "starter albums" for the group? I'd rather not get any Greatest Hits.

Please allow me to introduce myself
I?m a man of wealth and taste
I?ve been around for a long, long year
Stole many a man?s soul and faith
And I was ?round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what?s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a general?s rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what?s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I?m a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what?s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what?s confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me lucifer
?cause I?m in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I?ll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But what?s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down

Well there are actually two different versions of the Stones, one with the Late great Brain Jones and one without. The difference between the two different eras is like a difference between two different unique bands. For the Brian Jones era I would suggest Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed. For the post Brian Jones era I would suggest Sticky Fingers, Goats Head Soup and Some Girls.

I know you said you wouldn't want to get a greatest hits album but they have a Greatest Hits of their songs from 1964-71 called Hot Rocks which has a lot of their classic hits on it like Satisfaction, Under My Thumb, 19th Nervous Breakdown and Get Off of my Cloud along with some of their hit songs from Let it Bleed and Beggars Banquet. I highly recommend you get that if you can find it.

Good album (Hot Rocks). It's what introduced me to/got me hooked on the Stones.

They've had more blood transfusions than all AT members combined?

IIRC Page originally wanted to call Zeppelin the New YardBirds until someone said that it would fall like a "Lead Zeppelin" and adopted that name for the band. In order for people to not confuse lead with lead :)confused: like l-e-e-d :p) they changed the spelling to Led.

True, but you have to respect that band. Their influence and talent are very strong.

This thread now ofically sucks.
I am sitting here with some intense back pain from my sciatica and all I hear in my head is the Stones and "What a drag it is getting old".
It's beer 30.

What a drag it is getting old.

"Kids are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she's not really ill
There's a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day.

"Things are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day.

Doctor, please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old.

"Men just aren't the same today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
They just don't appreciate that you get tired
They're so hard to satisfy. You can tranquilise your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimise your plight.

Doctor,plese, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old.

Life's just much too hard today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
The pursuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose
No more running to the shelter of a mother's little helper
They just helped you on your way through your busy dying day.

Some pretty interesting lyrics fom a band back in the 60's don't you think?

Because you have a proclivity towards that?
