The Mars Volta are not easily digestible, but their music is enormously rewarding if you challenge yourself enough to dissect it.

It's one of "those" bands. The ones that have this cult following where all the people following it say they make pure gold because not many other people knew about them and they started to become big so they feel special that they "found them" before they hit the big time only to find out that the gernal public did not concieve them as well as they thought so they maintain the notion that the band is ahead of its time..... *take deep breath* I have never really liked them myself, but I atleast they are not annoying like Death Cab for Cutie.

Well put.
I was introduced to TMV by my little brother. He was 14 at the time! :) He was all about them.
I find them on the same level as Death Cab for Cutie as far as annoyance goes, I can stand DCFC, but only in small doses.

Maybe if you punch me in the stomach enough times, I'll start to enjoy that, too ;)
I won't deny that it's interesting, but it's like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer to me... there's so many other things I'd rather listen to.

Yes, I saw them at the Rave in Milwaukee, and the sound was beyond awful. I think it was in part the venue's terrible PA system, but come on, they have all day to set up and test...

they're amazing. it's organized. you just don't understand it because your brain hasn't interpreted yet. to your brain, it's just disorganized musical sounds that make no sense. the more you listen to it, the better you'll realize they are.

it's just like debussey's 'rite of spring'... when people hear something unfamiliar, their brain can't make sense of it. the more you hear it, though, the more beauty you can hear in it.

that's the problem with garbage like trapt and nickelback and linkin park... it's generic shit that completely closes your mind's ability to appreciate and enjoy "disorganized mess".

You're right. Go back to listening to Good Charlotte.

exactly. generic horseshit music like that ruins people's ability to enjoy GOOD music.

that's not at all what mars volta's about... and they don't play mars volta on the radio because it's too esoteric.

the only criticism i have about mars volta is the lyrics of most of their songs... soemtimes, it just seems like cedric just grabs a thesaurus and throws a string of difficult words together and there you go...

if you read the lyrics, a lot of times you'll find that they make no goddamn sense.

"only this manupod crescent in shape has escaped"

what the fuck is a manupod? something that walks on its hands? and if it were, why is it shaped like a crescent? why did it escape? makes no damn sense... but i'll tell you what does make sense; their music and energy are gorgeous.

My only problem with Cedric is that he uses Spanish in his lyrics often, but he speaks Spanish like an American. The words are right, but the pronunciation is atrocious.

Well, my general music repertoire consists of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric Clapton, and Muse. I'm sorry if you think that's generic horseshit music, because this is exactly what I think of the Mars Volta's De-Loused album.

"Televator" is another great song. Everything else reminds me of that chaotic part of "Echoes" by Pink Floyd, where just random jungle sounds are played.

For the record, Good Charlotte's not my type of music.

Mars Volta is one of the best band names ever. Their music is not my cup of tea but other folks seemed to have liked them before they broke up.
