What's so great about dual monitors?

I could theoretically do it right now (just upgraded to a 17" LCD from a 15" one) but I dont know if I want to waste the valuable desk space.

Somebody sell me on the merits of a multi-monitor system.

thanks.

Dual Monitors is a trade off.

Less desk space for more screen space.

Figure out which one is more important to you.

It's just more convenient, sure you can open multiple windows in Windows, but switching back & forth sucks, copying & pasting sucks, on & on...

Multiple monitors allow you to use all those windows more effectively.

I keep Outlook open on my 2nd monitor all the time & when I'm working with multiple programs & documents, it's really a time saver...

All in all, it's a luxury, not a need for me, but I've run duals for years now & would have a hard time going back.

agreed, I would say I'm a lot more productive with two monitors at work than just one. I have a 15" laptop WUXGA -blah blah, that does 1600x1200 and a 19" that's doing 1280x1024. I love it! If I could have a third, I'd be in heaven.

I love it. Especially when working with documents at work. You can have two items open full screen side by side and not have to swap between them to move data from one to the other.

Dual monitors is very useful when you are coding, and need to look at multiple files at the same time... I can have documents/man pages open on 1, and code on the other... Or running tests on 1 monitor and tracing the test on the other, etc...

I have it at home and I hate to go to work. I had 3 when I worked for Bloomberg!

Some useful things:
Image editing - [*]I can have the GIMP tools open on the little monitor and the pic I'm editing on the big one.
[*]I can have the original photo open on the little and the modified photo on the big so I can more readily compare the two.

Word processing - [*]It's so much easier to copy when you don't have to alt-tab between windows.
[*]When doing web research, you can have your browser on one and your paper on the other. So easy to transport the information.

Programming - [*]Keep you source code open in one and your compiler/output open in the other

Everyday - [*]Keep AIM, WinAMP and other stuff that's always open in the little monitor so you have ready access to them without interrupting your main window.

Gee Whiz - [*]I can watch a DVD on the big one and TV on the little one. At the same time.

If you have to think about why you need a dual monitor setup, then you don't.

I was running three 21's up until a few weeks ago
It was beautiful...specially for pron

I use dual 18" lcd's at work and I don't know how I got by without em! Really though, I like being able to have full screen windows of different program on each screen open at the same time. Makes editing doc's and such so much easier. When we finally close on our house, I plan on doing the same at home.
