For me Solaris doesn't work any better than the other forms of Unix. Most people who are addicted to the Sun platform are that way because of the hardware/cpu (which is marvel), not so much b/c of Solaris.
<< Supposedly it is the best platform (Solaris + Sparc hardware) to run Oracle on. >>
Actually I would say Oracle runs best on HP/UX.... and Solaris would be second...It runs a little better on our N4000's than our UE10000 cluster..
HP/UX is really a better operating system I think personally... It has an incredible Logical Volume Manager built in...(soo good that the Linux guys are trying to make a near 100% perfect emulation/copy of it).. whereas on Solaris you have to purchase a 3rd party add on from Veritas to get the same functionalty and then its not as "integrated" since its bolt-on...and HP/UX's MC/ServiceGuard clustering is probably the best clustering software in the world...and is 10000% better than Suns Clustering...I get the feeling that Sun just does not put money into its clustering...its generally considered a low end product... it causes us nothing but problems on our UE10K's.
