So you can take .mpeg, .avi, etc clips and play them on your tv, you can run Linux, etc. What are some other benefits of having a modded X-Box?

What else can you do that with for 150 and yet play all the xbox games, play roms from any console but the current three. You don't even need the hd, I stream my files.

you can copy games onto your harddrive and boot them.. basically you rent a game and its yours forevor. also you can add a larger HD. and you can run other apps. i had SNES, nes, and genesis on my xbox, as well as a linux distro on a 80 gig hd. and WMP with a few movies.

Nothing that's legal.

But you could easily get one of those Blockbuster Flip Cards($49.99 for 3 months of infinite rentals..), rent 90 games (a game a day), rip them all to your HD. You now have 90 games for $50.

Its not legal to mod it so we shouldn't even talk about that

Shoot. The linux, avi and streaming things are making me want to get an xbox now.

But I don't get it. I had my PSOne modded, so can you just bring an xbox, have the guy stick any old xbox modchip in there and work all this magic? Or is there a specific modchip? And how do you get the streaming/linux/etc going?

And stupid question, but after modding, the xbox can still play dvds, right? My PSOne's CD player stopped working after being modded. :-/

EDIT: I'm googling now, but if you have links, let me know.

I believe it is legal to mod it as long as you dont use Microsoft's BIOS. The part that is illegal is when you use MS's hacked BIOS. Although I could be wrong.

The Xbox Multimedia Center is way more than worth is. Go check out Tom's Hardware review.

Go check out xbox-scene.com for modding information. That is where you'll find all the information you'll need. You can still play DVDs and all the normal Xbox functions.

it's great because I can play NBA Ballers for a week and then when the game gets into the later stages you realize there is no AI and they make it "harder" by making the computer 100x more powerful and cheaper, and then you throw controllers at walls and thank god you didn't buy that stupid fvcking game

And yes, that's what blockbuster is for, but yeah...

I admit, for the past year I kind of made fun of people always talking about modding their xbox. I never really understood the point - well, except for illegal game copying. But I really think I'm gonna finally do it myself. I've been researching some methods of accessing videos on a central computer on another tv in my house and came to the conclusion that the Xbox is one of the better solutions with the xbox media center. The only other cheaper option is really the MediaMVP device, and that has a lot of other shortcomings, mostly from limitations on what it can do.
