So you can take .mpeg, .avi, etc clips and play them on your tv, you can run Linux, etc. What are some other benefits of having a modded X-Box?

Nothing that's legal.
But you could easily get one of those Blockbuster Flip Cards($49.99 for 3 months of infinite rentals..), rent 90 games (a game a day), rip them all to your HD. You now have 90 games for $50.

Shoot. The linux, avi and streaming things are making me want to get an xbox now.
But I don't get it. I had my PSOne modded, so can you just bring an xbox, have the guy stick any old xbox modchip in there and work all this magic? Or is there a specific modchip? And how do you get the streaming/linux/etc going?
And stupid question, but after modding, the xbox can still play dvds, right? My PSOne's CD player stopped working after being modded. :-/
EDIT: I'm googling now, but if you have links, let me know.
well, while your at it don't forget that it can play some nice games on it too..Originally posted by: Jeraden
I admit, for the past year I kind of made fun of people always talking about modding their xbox. I never really understood the point - well, except for illegal game copying. But I really think I'm gonna finally do it myself. I've been researching some methods of accessing videos on a central computer on another tv in my house and came to the conclusion that the Xbox is one of the better solutions with the xbox media center. The only other cheaper option is really the MediaMVP device, and that has a lot of other shortcomings, mostly from limitations on what it can do.
