What's so bad about Netscape 6?

Deeko

Lifer
I was bored so I downloaded Netscape 6.01 last night, I don't see what everyone hated so much about it. It seems to load pages alot faster than IE, and the only thing that hasn't worked right is the marquee I have on www.exetervolleyball.com(it's there but doesn't move), everything seems perfect...what's so horrible about it?

it's crap, that's what's bad about it.

it's like mozilla plus all of the microsoft bloat, but nothing to show for it. it's also VERY rough around the edges, like they threw it together at the last minute. some aspects of the program will refer to itself as 'mozilla' instead of 'netscape' [oops]. uhm...the preferences window on mine wasn't even resized (why is that there btw?) to the full size of the options when mine was initially installed either.

other than the fact that it attaches itself to just about every file type possible, and no matter what the uninstall won't undo the associations?

dont do it!

netscape 6 is slow and bulky...if you really want a good netscape version, get the newest Communicator that is out

NS6 is a programming nightmare for webdevs... they removed layers from their functionality... plus it just plain sucks.. netscape is the worst browser out there.

I never liked Netscape either, but I was bored....and I was just wondering what was so terrible about this browser, cause I haven't experienced any major problems....yet

Netscape6 was a lot buggier than 4.7x when I tried it... dunno if they've fixed it yet though. I still use 4.7x when doing web dev. Since it's still an option to download it, mebbe it's still the better product? Anyway, the worst part by far was the uninstall. =P

Netscape is in bed with just about every plug-in company there is

Do you want Realplayer?...NO....okay here you go!
DO you want AOL IM?.......NO....okay here you go!
Do you want Winamp?....have it already......Here, have another older one!!!

If they cut out some of add-in the crap or at least gave you the option to skip it, it might trim it down some.....but I guees they would lose cash from those companies

The biggest problem I have with Netscape 6.01 is the fact it crashes so much. It also has problems rendering some pages (not just ActiveX code, either).

Netscape 6 is also very bloated. If I could just get Gecko alone, I might be more inclined to use it. For now, it is a browser that should be passed up.

well, i personally don't like netscape cuz of the enter button thingy (normally, ie defaults the enter button to the submit/watnotbutton

yeah that is very annoying!

<< The only thing good for netscape is: it's not made from Micro$oft. >>

And AOL is much better?😛
I second that submit button problem. Doesn't let you use the enter key...

I use NS 6(Mozilla) in Linux, but won't use it in Windows. For Windows I still use Communicator 4.76.

Mozilla is really nice in Linux, but seems kinda buggy in Windows.

Everyone bashing Netscape should take a look at Mozilla first. Go download a nightly build and have a look. Mozilla has none of the netscape/AOL crap or anything added on. Download Here

One other thing I noticed being a web developer. IE is lax on it's language strictness, and thus alot of people with less than steller programming find it easier to code for. Mozilla (Gecko) sticks dead on to the W3 standards and displays things correctly to the language. I actually prefer Mozilla for that reason. Also it's a browser, mail client, WYSIWYG editor and newsgroup reader that weighs in under 8MB. M$ can't touch that, what?, 55MB for IE5.5.(!)

ummmmm custom install... and with the communicator versions, you can just get the base browser
