What's Raleigh like?

I was initially just looking in my home area of Hampton Roads, VA. Things are going downhill fast where I work though, and I am probably going to be the last man here. Means life is going to suck real fast in IT.

My wife likes the idea of Raleigh because she heard Duke University Hospital was nearby and she's always wanted to work there as a critical care nurse.

Anyone know the general IT environment is like there? How is Raleigh in general? Nice city?

I worked there for a summer during grad school. It is very clean, but it is a ghost town on the weekends. It definitely doesn't have urbanites, like other cities. Almost everyone who works in Raleigh commutes to Raleigh from somewhere else.

Research Triangle Park is where most of the jobs are. Housing is cheaper outside of Raleigh, but much more expensive in towns like Cary. Stay away from Durham.

If she wants to work critical care, don't forget that there is another tertiary care hospital system (UNC Hospitals) just down the road. The hospitals in the area (both those at the medical schools and those affiliated with them) are desperate for nurses.

Many of the tech companies have contracted during the past decade but there are still jobs available.

I second the Durham comment. A friend summed up the Durham experience, "Durham appears to be trying to dive to the bottom of society and avoid any interruptions on the way."

It used to be that I thought that all of the things going wrong with Durham government was due to incompetence. Later I thought it was because too many of their employees are crooks. Now I understand that the two terms are not mutually exclusive when it comes to Durham City government.

One good way to lget a feel for the area is to read the paper for a while: Raleigh News & Observer

QFT. My relatives live there and I lived close enough to go visit every once in a while.

Weather is great there. So if you like the outdoors: hiking, biking, MTB, camping, hunting, fishing; you will love it there. Otherwise, it can be a pretty slow paced lifestyle. Not too bad though.

Yup. My sister and her husband live in the 'burbs. They have a cheap house on a nice ass lot.

I did look into the alterna-weekly one time and saw a few cool bands, but have never explored the nightlife because my sister is boring. It is very pretty, though.
