Whats "normal" temperature for AMD Athon XP

Just wondering...

My system is running ok and stable, my XP 1600+ is running at 53C under normal load and 57C under heavy use.
It seems a bit high to me? I have thermal silverpaste in my cooler, 2x casecoolers etc...

At what temperature does the processor fail?

If you are using the retail HSF then that temp is typical. Anything under 65C is adequate IMHO, and they are rated to run in excess of 80C.

I have seen many report beeter temps then that with retail HSF for the xp...hell the retail taisols on the much hotter tbird 1400mhz chips were doing that.

PLease list boards as they may see temps differently...

IMO, I think it is a bit high for a chip that should be about the temps of an older 1.2tbird...

Are you running a retail HSF????

If not, waht are you running??? Is it a 60mm fan?? Does it run at 5400rpm or greater??? What is the cfm stated at manufacturers website??

Also waht are the case temps or system temps as reported??

Soo,

I am running:

Epox 8KHA+
Coolermaster DP5-6I31C, 60mm, 4800 RPM, 27.72 CFM.

Case/system temp normally around 35-38C.

Temperatures were taken from MBM5, but bios also shows app. same temps.

dafinn...those case/system temps are a bit high...at 35c that is 95f...usually those system temps should be closer to ambient room temperature plus a bit...I would think 28c-30c sounds more in line....

The higher the system temp ad case air means the hsf for the cpu is drawing warmer air to try to cool heatsink...The warmer the air the less effective it is in removing heat off of the surface of the fins...

Work on case temp/ air flow/ etc..

Is there a passive hs on the chipset? PLace one there...

Try running w tih case off...if temps go down then that is the clue...

Thanks Duvie...

I removed my case cover, and temperatures went down. System now at 30C and CPU at 50C. Seems I have to do some work improving my case ventilation!

It is higher than most 1600+s, but it is in no way dangerous. The original TBirds could withstand 95C before being damaged. I suspect the XPs are just as durable.

I'm also running an XP 1600+ on the 8KHA+ board and after six hours my CPU is at 47 degrees. I got the retail CPU ans used their thermal compound. Using the Antec SX 635 case.

I was curious about something myself. I have an Athlon 1200mhz and it reports about 50C+ in the BIOS but about 34C in Sandra. I'm inclined to believe Sandra over the BIOS just because the fan/heatsink I got (Swiftech, forgot the model name) was keeping a 1GHz at 30C on Tom's Hardware Guide review.

I've got plenty of ventilation on my case, moving all the hot air out of the rear. My case temp stays at about 28C on the mobo. Anyway, I found it hard to believe that a $70 fan/heatsink that got 30C on a 1GHz would get 50-55C on a 1.2GHz. I have a Soyo Dragon Plus! as the motherboard. Is it reporting correctly or is Sandra? Maybe I should install the temp reading software for the motherboard and see what it says too...

My sentiments exactly.... 🙂

People using Dragon Orbs and such reporting lower cpu temps than I'm running (though I've bent the thermosistor up to touch cpu backside), and I'm watercooled...lol IMO, as long as the temps your getting aren't dangerously high, throw the actual numbers out the fsckin' window as they mean nothing. 🙂

I'm using a retail HSF unit with one damaged fin (Yes, I know. I'm an idiot. I was messing with my fan too much on a mobo with busted fan headers).

I'm getting 46*C max on the proc, even with the damaged fin. It's an Athlon XP 1600+.

I can't wait till my Alpha 8045 and my Panaflo comes 🙂

I'm gonna agree with you YBS1. As long as your CPU posts and doesn't lock up in Windows your fine. I take my temps with a grain of salt. I've bought 3 different expensive heatsink/fan combos in the past year hoping to get low ass temps like everyone else seems to get. I've given up, I think the thermosistors are just inaccurate. I don't have any problems overclocking to high speeds, and I never seem to get crashes now that I've worked out all the kinks in this mobo.

Screw the temps, screw the benchmarks. If your happy with what you got, don't worry about the numbers.

YSB1 and Valinos,

exactly... amazingly, there are some people who have grasped this fact that numerous people and reviewers can't.

different amd motherboards read temps differently. AMbient case temp plays a huge role too, and that is often way overlooked. Clearly, someone wtih a 20C case temp can't compare directly to someone with a 39C case temp.

there are "normal" temps you can look for based on your particular motherboard, adjusted for ambient system temp, but trying to reduce temps beyond your own mb's particular "normal" range is often not possible (outside of bending down the socket-thermistor to further throw off readings).

Mike
P.S. regarding the sandra tests, which sandra version are you using? And what are you windows temps with another temp program like motherbaord monitor or mb probe?

P.S.2. Don't look at toms hardware results as being accurate or even remotely accurate. Up until the watercooling roundup, htey were using socket-thermsitor testing.

Check it out - my Tbird 1Ghz overclocked to 1.33Ghz is running at 24.0C/75.2F - not bad at all. I have the volcano 2 on it. Some people don't like that fan, but it obviously works for me..... Its also cold in the computer room, and I have the front and back case fans...

Hit the nail on the button 😉,when my case temp is around 21c I get 38c-39c full load for RC5 ,on the other hand when I `ve the central heating on to warm the house up the case temps goes up to 28c and I get around 43c-45c full load on cpu for RC5 🙂.
