i've been drooling over the 9800 pro for a while and am about to jump in and buy one ... but i'm wondering what's coming out next, and when, in the gpu arena. should i jump in now or wait for the next round? your thoughts are greatly appreciated!
 
NV40 at the end of Q4 (least that's what they've been saying..may be beginning of Q1 04) and the RV400 right around the same time.
 
Take a look at the recent R360 thread. The thing is, I have no idea when it's coming out...I'm in the same situation as you. But I'm impatient, and the 9800 pro seems enough for me, it'll handle everything up to (and probably through) Doom 3, including Half-Life 2.
 
I think it's the r360 that's going to come with HL2, so it should be released around the same time. It should be a hell of a nice card, but I don't know if you're going to want to pay $500 or whatever ridiculous amount they'll be charging for it. At any rate, a 9800pro should be able to run HL2, Doom3, and a lot of other games to come for a while without any difficulties.

As far as the R360? There was a link in the R360 thread, that's as much as you're gonna get, it's all just speculation (leaks) at this point.
