I've read you have R700, R800, R900, and R10K lined up. Already in design & planning phases, a long range goal. Overall a nice plan from AMD. Expect to see R800 in late spring / early summer 2009.

r800, rv870xt, rv870

codenamed: "Little dragon"

specs:
* 40nm or 45nm fab process
* 140 sq. mm die size
* 192 ALUs, 960 stream processors
* 256-bit GDDR5 memory controller

"It's been known for some time that RV870 would be a shrink of RV770. The node following 65/55nm would be 45/40nm, but we weren't sure if AMD would go to 45nm or directly to half-node 40nm. It's now clear that AMD will go directly to 40nm and aim for a performance per watt ratio twice that of RV770. RV870 has been code-named "Lil Dragon", which does indicate that this will be something small, yet something to fear.

The overall performance has been suggested to be somewhere around 20% better than RV770 with a significant drop in power consumption. This points to 960 shaders (192x5), 48 texture units, 24 ROPs and so forth. If this is the case, TDP of the RV870 should be around 150W at most with today's frequencies. This is just an estimate on our part as technical specifications are still hard to come by. We also presume AMD to stay at DirectX 10.1 for now"

I hear DX11 support is in Rv870 now.

"We heard from chiphell forum that TSMC now tries 40nm process to produce ATI RV740 graphics chip in the labs. It?s said that RV740 would be the vanguard of 40 nm graphics chips.
We heard 40nm RV740 would be announced at the end of this year. Also at the first half of 2009, ATI would introduce R870, the last graphics chip based on R600 architecture. R870 would be 40nm chip with 2000 sp inside."

"The article cites that this is a rather precarious position for NVIDIA as it will be unable to prepare or even, counteract, AMD's RV870 GPU and if its offering ends up slower than AMD's, it could have an undesirable impact on NVIDIA's outlook.With GPU wars shifting into 40nm mode, 2009 has real potential to overshadow the big GPU duels of this year."

"Lil' Dragon, or RV870, is under much speculation right now. Facts are thin and whether we're looking at another spawn of R600 or if it is a whole new chip is being debated, but it looks like we're heading for another tweaked chip based on the R600 core, found beneath the massive cooler used by Radeon HD 2900 XT. RV770 has been a huge success and AMD seems confident that the next generation will hit NVIDIA even harder, but we're still a bit uncertain as to what NVIDIA has coming so we can only speculate there.

We've been told that AMD has promised partners that its next chip, that would be RV870, will sport DirectX 11 support and much improved PowerPlay. We can safely say that improving PowerPlay should be quite easy for AMD since it is in-house technology, and it doesn't work nearly as well as we had hoped, but DirectX 11 is not done yet. DirectX 11 will run on Vista though, so you don't have to worry about waiting for Windows 7. "
