What's new in laptops and desktops?

I'm getting ready to buy new systems for work. I'm just wondering what new technologies are out there that I shouldn't miss out on. Any new stuff come out recently that may not be in all laptops yet? Did the replaceable video card thing ever happen?

Any websites you recommend for keeping up with the latest tech (besides Anandtech)?

Any recommendations for manufacturers, components, whatever would be appreciated. I need powerful workstation caliber desktops. I don't know if I should cross over to actual "workstations" though. I mean with SCSI and ECC RAM and Xeon processors and such. Maybe someone could give me some input on that...

Thank you.

For us to know what would be "new" for you, we need to know what the the latest technology when you "were around".
A lot has happened since the Katmai days. :p

Our current computers were bought about 7 years ago. The desktops are Athlon Thunderbirds and the laptops are Pentium IIIs. I know a lot has happened since then, but I wanna know the most recent or upcoming stuff to include in our next generation, which will have to last another 7 years...

So are you looking for just laptops or laptops and desktops? It makes a huge difference and your OP is pretty vague.

AnandTech, HardOCP, TomsHardware are still the main places I know of for tech articles.

Quad-core CPUs will be affordable near the end of this year for desktops, from both intel and AMD.

Hard drives are bigger. Memory needs have increased. It's too soon to move to Vista. Get DVD burners.
