What's my issue? CPU? MOBO? RAM? PSU?

here's what happened today:

1) Computer gave me bluescreen. Hasn't done that since before the Microsoft Vista patches last fall. But it'd been along time since I've seen one, so, my thought was 'oh well.'

2) 15 minutes later the computer totally shut off. Now that's not normal behavior. I noticed then that the case was warm. Strangely warm. I opened it up and found it clogged with dust everywhere. Now that's mighty peculiar since I cleaned it out in early April...and I have had a 2 month schedule for 2 years. But the case was hot, air was clogged.

3) After cleaning it all out, the computer just cuts off. It can be at the BIOS screen or after loading windows.

4) I really suspect CPU or PSU, but, I decided to try something simple and remove 1 of my video cards (I have an SLI setup.) First time, no luck. The computer totally dies. I swap cards to test the other one. yay! I'm into Windows. Yay ! I'm into Conan. YAY , 30 minutes of Conan.

5) I then start a session at Newegg.com to cancel my overnight shipment of motherboard and CPU. I'm too late. That sucks session last ~10 minutes.

6) So Im running for like 40 minutes when computer just shuts off without warning.

So......my #1 culprit is either PSU shutting down OR the motherboard. I have had a motherboard a few years ago choke on a bad 'cpu fan sensor'.

What do you guys think??

1) You should breathe more often.
2) Stream of conscious writing is great for compositions but, not for tech.
3) I would do a minimal install re-seating all components as well as running memtest. There are too many variables to randomly pick a culprit. A methodical approach to troubleshooting will save money and time.

That's what I think. 🙂

It was the PSU - new PSU and no problems. It was a Seasonic ss600HT. I ended up swapping out the motherboard too because one of the built-on fans is very noisy. I have a new problem (check next thread !!)

and considering the issues of it retyping old data, I'd deep scan the system and check to see what addons to FF you have installed.
