What's more likely to happen first: Nvidia gets Async or the 490 gets a release date?

The 490 is nothing but a myth at this point. Nvidia users don't seem to mind being lied to about async support considering they still didn't get the maxwell magical async drivers, but seem to think it'll be different this time.

Nvidia has async support, but pre Pascal cards didn't have any advantages for it built into their hardware, so it was not an advantage. Pascal doesn't do async in the way AMD does either, but they built in some pre-emption and faster context switching in the hardware, so they now gain advantages with async as well.

If you are asking if Nvidia will support async before the 490 is released, the answer is clear. Nvidia already has async. If you are asking when they'll do async the way AMD cards do, that could be never.

What is the point of this thread ? Frankly Vega isn't out till atleast Q1 2017. Nvidia supports Asynchronous compute. The implementation details between AMD and Nvidia differ. But Nvidia shows perf improvements with asynchronous compute. The fact is Nvidia has much better shader utilization and efficiency than AMD and thus show smaller gains with async compute.
