putting together a "best xp" rig with A64 X2

Don't feel like doing sli or crossfire but I could

7800 GTX 512 (sli)
X1900 XTX
7950 gx2 (Quad but support blows)

or I could tone it down a notch and go with

6800 Ultra's
X850 XT's
or
X800 XT PE

I would rather go with one of the these older cards in a single core rig vs a dual

I'm leaning toward X1900 XTX or 7800 GTX 512

I like the way you think... I really feel that the X1900 was a very forward thinking design for Ati

Well, the x1900 gets pretty noisy if you turn it up.... Same with a lot of the x2 cards. I wouldn't say any are truly loud on their own. I did have an 8800gs once upon a time that had an annoying pitch to it that i couldnt do anything about because it was only a 2 wire fan

That is a tough call for the ultimate XP rig... The X1900 XTX was an awesome card, and IIRC the only card that would let you play Oblivion with HDR and AA at the time. The 7800GTX 512 was special in its own right just because of its rarity.

I had a XFX X1950Pro and it was loud, but it lasted me quite a while. Until the cooler crapped out and I bought an upgrade.

Setting up my Windows 95 rig now. Gonna set it right next to Win3.12 box. Dungeon Keeper 2 here I come!!!!
Seriously though, X1900 was a forward thinking arch. Wasn't that the hybrid with 40 programmable shaders and old style pipelines? Or was that the X1800? Eyes Forghetz.

GoG.com has Dungeon Keeper 2 with modern OS support.
Still haven't got round to playing my copy.

I know this is an XP rig, so DX10+ isn't needed, but why not a GeForce 8800GT or Radeon 3870... something along those lines?

Rig was setup with the following:

3800 x2 @2.5 so far
Abit at8 32x
Corsiar xms pro ddr 400 2x1 gb (the ones with the activity leds)
Sapphire x1900 xtx
LG Flatron 1280x1024 monitor

Just got done playing a 2 hour stint of oblivion and some cod 2. My god Oblivion was a system killer. Played at 1280x800 widescreen, prefer that aspect ratio.

Opteron 285's are cheap on Ebay... :) I remember some of those hitting 3GHz.

I'm sure I have more room on this 3800 X2 but yeah.. I would love to get a opty 185 or fx 60...

Back in the day I had my 3800 x2 running at 2.4 for everyday use/gaming. I think the highest I clocked it benchmark stable was 2.6.
