What's just around the corner?

In the article on the front page about the FX53, there is mention of a caution sign coming soon and something coming around the corner. What is this?

The "something new" coming is the new motherboards based on the new processor pin count. Right now the FX 51 & 53 use a 940 pin socket (this is identical to the Opteron processors) that require the procs to use registered memory modules (a bit slower). The regual AMD 64 procs use 754 pins.

AMD is converging these two sockets into one socket 939 (probably in May although there were some 939 pin boards on display at Cebit). This is what you should hold off for if you want to somewhat "future proof" your new purchase. The FX-53 will be the last proc for the 940 pin line (dead end, no upgrades).

😎

Yes, the Opteron will continue to be socket 940 for awhile, though who knows how long.
