What's it mean if someone has one long finger nail?

i am not sure, but to be honest, when i see that on males, it grosses me out no end.

In all honesty, long before tools were invented, or at least were commonplace, this was probably the world's first pocketknife. Even in today's world it's more easily accessible, cheaper and you can't forget it laying around somewhere and lose it. Not that I do this - Victorinox FTW. But to each his own.
 
its some sort of a status symbol. someone who is able to grow a long pinky nail is trying to show he's above doing manual labor. he's saying 'look at me, this nail will never break because i never get involved in the dirty work'

i saw this a lot in western parts of china where uneducated folk who managed to be successful businessmen wanted to distinguish themselves from the poorer class.
 
If they are asian it could mean drugs or it could be what puffff is talking about, a superficial and antiquated symbol of status.
 
I heard alot of military people would try to keep one nail a bit longer than allowed to help with the small parts during assembly of their M-16's.
