What's it like in Miami?

Done with college, almost done with internship... I really don't want to live in Houston again, although Austin would be pretty nice. Since I'm still pretty much free to go anywhere I can find a job, I figure I should choose wisely now. Miami seems like a nice place-- undeveloped beaches not too far, diverse culture, seafood, hot Cuban women.

I'm sure a lot of ATOTers live in Miami. What's it like??

Learn to speak Cuban (as opposed to Spanish) and never meet one of those "hot Cuban women" at a Salsa club.

I've taken Spanish and can understand most of what I hear, so it would be a good opportunity to learn to speak it right? What's wrong with meeting a hot Cuban woman at a salsa club?

my GF and I were actually thinkin about doing this too. I love the beach, I could play golf year round, and I wouldn't have to deal with winter really.

however the whole thing about hurricanes really is making me not sure about it cause it just seems so risky to buy property in a high-risk area. however we could rent for a while possibly but I dunno. it's still up in the air to us. it would also be weird moving away from family and being a 3 hour flight away from them, considering i've lived near my family the whole time.

It's hotter than hell there in the summer but it makes up for the oppressive heat by also being extremely humid. ;)

Jesus, you do not want to live there. TRUST ME.

Unless you are gonna get paid over 100k a year, good luck finding a decent place at a decent price. There's quite a bit to do, but it's over packed, dangerous in some areas, and drivers are crazy. They make the driving rules down there, I'm serious. Try driving down US1 at 5PM on a weekday. Then you'll see what I'm talking about.

Before you really consider moving to Miami, take a weekend trip there. I go there every now and then since I have a lot of family that lives there. I currently live in Orlando, and it's not as bad as Miami since we have quite a bit of suburbs and communities around Orlando. Orlando also has quite a bit of space while Miami doesn't.

The highest recorded temperature in Miami was 100F. That's what we set our air conditioners to in Texas!

I wouldn't be caught dead living in a suburb, especially a Florida suburb!

Anyone know what those streamlined retro trailers weigh? I would live in a trailer in order to be able to escape the hurricanes if it's under 6500lbs so my Jeep can tow it.

100F with 90% humidity is miserable as hell.

Houston has you beat. 100F + 90% humidity + the #1 amount of smog in the US.

At least you don't dehydrate as fast as in 100F 5% humidity.

I love visiting Miami Beach, but I haven't spent too much time in Miami proper. I don't know if I'd necessarily want to live there... unless I could constantly live the vacation lifestyle.

Worked in Miami and yup you better learn to speak Spanish and love Cocaine. It has to be one of the worst cities I have ever worked in let alone want to live there. When I got laid off I was in west Plam. I amlmost bought a house there. Close to the beach and everything you want and not to far from Orlando. I dont know about the houses there now but I was going to ge a 2bedroom, 3 car garage, with a 12ft inground with a whirlpool that overflowed into the pool for $53K. It was a VA and needed a little work but nice. Town was nice and IMO had everything you are looking for. Thats where Im going after the kids grow up and I sell my house. I liked West Palm Beach FL..

I'd much rather have high density than law density sprawl like Houston. Sprawl is the reason Houston is the most polluted.

Spanglish is a must. Realize that you are actually contemplating living in a foreign country without visa requirements. Oh and be sure to keep all of your shots up-to-date.

I lived in south florida for 20 years of my life. IF you are looking to rent you WILL need a roommate (unless you are making very decent money or want to live in the hood). You will need to learn spanish as discussed above. The weather is never changing. It goes from really hot and humid to really hot. There are 2 or so weeks worth of "winter" weather where it can get to the 40's (very unlikely though). This may sound great people used to having winters have a very hard time adjusting. There will no longer be a fall or a spring as you would know it now.

Honestly I've moved from S.FL to IL and i love IL. The weather changes the people are great its just a really nice place to be. The ONLY reason i would want to go back to FL is b/c of my family.

It also should be said that South Florida is a very face pace area. And in general people are a$$holes there. They (again in general) just demand demand and demand more. It is VERY hard to keep them happy.

If you do decide to live there....good luck and I hope you are happy. I would personally recommend more like lakeland or tampa...
