I've been looking forward to this one for a long time now (big id fan) and I see it finally has a release date of September 13, 2011.

Just looking for thoughts/speculations on what would be needed to max it out. Carmack has always pushed the boundaries in the past so it should be pretty exciting. The next big leap since Crysis 1?

Also, as Carmack always uses OpenGL, what are the inherent advantages disadvantages that will be a factor (such as is there a difference in the performance of a mulit-gpu setup on OpenGL vs DirectX) etc etc.

Ready, set, speculate!

no idea but based on how good it looks on the consoles I would say a gtx460 and i5 750 should easily handle it at 1920. maybe even with some decent AA too.

It will probably be more efficient than Crysis. While Crysis was pretty not many people will argue it was well optimized. Since they have a scaled down version of Rage running on the Iphone I doubt it will require much to run on a PC.

Because it will be programmed more efficiently or because you think it won't look as good? or both?

I would say because it is being designed to run at 30fps on all consoles. It doesn't look that great to me from what I have seen, but it doesn't look bad either. It just doesn't look as graphically intense as Crysis, but maybe on par with FarCry 2 (well better than FC2, but not quite Crysis level).

it is indeed id's first game that's targeted primarily at the console.....hopefully the pc version is more than just same visuals with better framerate and just the higher res.

As Martimus alluded to. ID switched to the Xbox360 as its lead development platform sometime ago and as such the games they produce arent going to be as demanding as something developed natively for the PC.
